Lower Main tour in Slatington Saturday

It’s always nice to take a stroll down memory lane.

That’s exactly what guests who attend A Trip Downtown Lower Main Street (1862-1952) in Slatington will soon be able to do.

Sponsored by the Slatington History Preservation Committee, the event will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Vigilant Fire Company.

It will be a lecture/presentation on prominent buildings, businesses and people, according to Robert Stettner, treasurer of the committee.

“A lot of people living in town are probably not familiar,” Stettner said. “The history is a very rich history.”

Judy Snyder, president of the committee, will give the welcome.

“We’re very fortunate to have all the businesses,” Snyder said. “We’re fortunate that we have people interested in history on our committee; hopefully we can entice more people to serve on the board.”

Speakers will include:

• Lehigh Valley Railroad and Slatington Station & Slate Businesses presented by Mike Hofmann. The station opened in 1862, but was destroyed by a train crash on Feb. 1, 1969.

• David Williams, presented by Tim Snyder. Williams was a prominent slate manufacturer, quarry owner and businessman. He owned Williams Island, a popular recreation area.

• A.A. Kern Market, presented by Susan Kern. The A.A. Kern Market was one of two retail outlets that augmented Amandus Kern’s butcher business/slaughterhouse.

• Boyer’s Hardware, presented by Mike Hofmann. Slatington’s oldest business begun in 1868. It is now a fifth-generation, family-owned business still at it’s original location.

• Henry Bittner/Bittner House, presented by Tim Snyder. Slatington’s principal hotel, it was one of the most modern hotels in Lehigh County, with five stories and livery stables.

• Vigilant Fire Company, presented by Robert Stettner. Chartered in 1894, it was Slatington’s second fire company, and has been located on Main Street for 59 years.

Afterward, there were will be a Question & Answer session. Refreshments will also be served, and guests may view the historical displays.
