Local Roundup: Results from May 4

Lehighton and Marian both posted wins in baseball and softball on Thursday, while Northwestern earned victories in softball and girls lacrosse.

BASEBALL

Lehighton-Jim Thorpe

Lehighton erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning to break a tie and gain a 9-1 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Ian Rarick had two hits, one a triple, and knocked in two runs. He also scored a pair of runs.

The Indians also received a pair of hits and two RBIs from Brady O’Donnell, while Austin Green delivered a double, scored twice and drove home a pair of runs.

Lehighton starter and winning pitcher Aidan Albert tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run and three walks with striking out five.

For the Olympians, Rich Strack finished with three hits and an RBI. Tanner Yurchak chipped in with two hits.

The Indians improved to 11-6 overall, and 8-3 in the league. Thorpe fell to 4-12, and 2-7.

Mahanoy Area-Marian

Marian’s Jake Bobish and Andrew Baran combined on a five-inning no-hitter as the Colts posted a 12-1 Schuylkill League victory over Mahanoy Area.

Bobish tossed the first four frames, allowing two walks while striking out five. Baran completed the no-hitter, fanning one in his one inning of work.

Offensively, Chase Petrilyak went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs. Brian Hinkle contributed a hit, two runs and an RBI, while Chris Chambers collected two hits and scored a run.

The Colts, who blew the game open with a seven-run third inning, also received a double, RBI, and a run from Joe Walko.

Marian upped its overall mark to 8-7, and its league record to 5-5.

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

Pine Grove pushed across four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to snap a tie game and earn a 5-1 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Brandon Unger had two hits and knocked in two runs for the Cardinals, while winning pitcher Garrett Brandt added a pair of hits and scored twice.

Brandt tossed six innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out three.

The Blue Raiders received a pair of hits and a run from Lucas Milot.

Pine Grove, who clinched a district playoff berth, is now 9-5 overall and 6-4 in the league. Tamaqua slipped to 8-6 and 5-5.

Weatherly-Shenandoah Valley

Shenandoah Valley pulled away from Weatherly to earn an 11-4 Schuylkill League victory.

Seven different players registered two hits for the Blue Devils, including Brayden Maksimik, who led off the home first with a homer and knocked in two runs. The winners, who used a six-run fifth inning to widen their advantage, also received two RBIs from Brady Najda.

The Wreckers’ Jack James had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Teammate Ian McLaurin added a hit and two runs.

Shenandoah is now 8-7 overall, and 5-5 in the league. Weatherly dropped to 3-13, and 1-9.

Northern Lehigh-Southern Lehigh

Northern Lehigh shocked Southern Lehigh by taking an early 4-0 lead, but the Spartans rebounded to win a 15-5 Colonial League contest.

Tyler Fenstermaker and Connor Simms both had two hits for the Bulldogs, who dropped to 3-15 overall and 3-12 in the league.

Solehi, which used a 10-run sixth inning to end the game, received two hits and four RBIs from Janssen Brown, while Corey Trump added a pair of hits, three runs and three RBIs.

The Spartans sport a 15-1 overall record, and a 14-1 mark in the CL.

SOFTBALL

Northwestern-Palmerton

Freshman Emma Freeman pitched a four-hit shutout to lead Northwestern to a 4-0 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Freeman helped her own cause with an RBI single, while Isabelle Akelaitis and Abby Dunstan both added run-scoring hits.

For the Blue Bombers, Megan Matsko doubled and knocked in a run.

The Tigers, who have clinched the league’s Western Division title and a bye to the CL semifinals, are 16-2 overall and 13-2 in the league. Palmerton, which will play in the league quarterfinals, dropped to 11-7 and 9-6.

Northern Lehigh clinched a berth in the Colonial League playoffs with a 13-9 victory over Southern Lehigh.

The Bulldogs put themselves in a good position early, scoring six times in the first inning. Jordyn Hemingway delivered a two-run double during the frame, and Cadence Peters added a run-scoring double.

Kylee Snyder finished the contest with four hits and two runs. Hemingway added another double and crossed home plate three times, while Peters, Kaitlyn Stock and Peyton Hoffman all contributed two hits.

For the Spartans, Kaley Hoffman collected three hits - one a homer - and three runs.

Northern Lehigh improved to 11-6 overall, and 8-6 in the league. Solehi fell to 7-11, and 6-9.

Lehighton-Jim Thorpe

The top of the lineup had a big day offensively to lead Lehighton to an 11-8 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Leadoff hitter Maggie Pagotto finished 3-for-5 with four runs and two RBIs, while No. 2 hitter Anna Laible went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.

The Indians also received two hits and three RBIs from Abby Chavanic, with Mia Snyder adding a pair of hits, a run and an RBI.

For the Olympians, Oleska McAndrew collected two hits and two runs, while Amanda Goodchild drilled a three-run homer.

Lehighton upped its overall mark to 7-10 overall, and 4-8 in the league. Thorpe fell to 1-14, and 0-11.

Mahanoy Area-Marian

Marian’s Morgan Kelly pitched a one-hit shutout, and also recorded her 500th-career strikeout, as the Fillies rolled to a 10-0 Schuylkill League victory over Mahanoy Area.

Kelly, who struck out 11 in the contest, also excelled at the plate. She finished 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs and two RBIs.

The winners, who improved to 11-4 overall and 6-4 in the league, received three hits and a run from Danica Karlick. Also contributing offensively were Malina Letcher (two singles, two RBIs), Anna Garbosky (single, triple) and Alise Heisey (two singles, two runs scored).

The loss keeps Mahanoy winless at 0-14, and 0-10.

Weatherly scored the go-ahead, and eventual winning run, in the top of the seventh inning to earn a 5-4 Schuylkill League victory over Shenandoah Valley.

Madisyn vonFrisch pitched a six-hitter and struck out 12 in helping the Wreckers move to 9-5 overall and 5-4 in the league.

Rachel Rosenlund collected a pair of hits for the winners.

For Shenandoah, now 2-11 and 2-8, Vanessa Coyle had two hits, while Jennifer Selby added two RBIs.

Panther Valley-Tri-Valley

Tri-Valley remained undefeated in the Schuylkill League after pulling away from Panther Valley for a 12-4 victory.

Brittany Rice paced the Bulldogs with two hits, one a homer, and three RBIs.

The Panthers were led by Morgan Orsulak, who finished with three hits and a run. Mikayla Yuricheck added a triple and knocked in two runs, while Kaidence Krapft chipped in with a hit and an RBI.

The loss dropped PV to 6-10 overall, and 3-7 in the league. Tri-Valley is 13-1, and 10-0.

McKayla Aungst knocked in three runs and earned the pitching win as Pine Grove blanked Tamaqua, 10-0, in Schuylkill League action.

The Cardinals’ Madison Shiffer and Addison Zimmerman both had two hits and an RBI, while Callee Leffler and Alissa Dorsey each chipped in with a pair of hits.

The Blue Raiders slipped to 4-12 overall, and 2-9 in the league, while Pine Grove is now 12-5, and 8-4.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Northwestern-Parkland

Olivia Costa scored a team-high six goals to help lead Northwestern to a 19-7 victory over Parkland.

The Tigers’ Claire Costa contributed five goals and an assist, while Sydney Wright added four goals and two helpers.

The winners, now 9-6, also received two goals and three assists from Ava Collins, with Alex Vennera supplying two goals and one assist.

Gigi Leonzi paced the Trojans (6-9) with four goals.

BOYS LACROSSE

Parkland-Northwestern

Northwestern dropped a 15-8 decision to Parkland.

Austin Sosnovik had four goals and an assist to lead the Tigers, now 9-6. Devon Hildebrand added a goal and an assist, while Blaine Snyder, Carter Zentz and Lucas Heeps all chipped in with a goal. Goalie Bailen Smargiassi registered 15 saves.

The Trojans (15-2) received four goals from both Chase and Parker Kusko.

Emmaus-Pleasant Valley

Jack Restino scored six goals to help Emmaus roll to a 19-3 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

The winners also received four goals and two assists from Liam Rooney, while Will Barber finished with three goals and seven helpers.

PV ended the regular season at 8-10, while the Hornets are now 12-5.
