Sweet treats in Slatington

They make their own baked goods from scratch.

The tasty treats that Wild & Free Bakery churns out by hand are certain to whet the palate of customers who visit them at their new location.

A grand opening and ribbon-cutting presented by the Greater Northern Lehigh Chamber was held March 24 at the site of the bakery inside the Slatington Farmers Market.

The business has been open since November, according to Connie Hoffman, who along with her husband Matt, owns the bakery inside the farmers market on Route 873 in Washington Township.

“Our grand opening happened a little after our actual opening,” Connie Hoffman said. “We had a great turnout.”

Hoffman said the bakery is known for its natural products.

“We’re one of the few places you can get fresh from scratch pastries and desserts,” she said. “We make pretty much everything ourselves; you can’t really find fresh handmade croissants around here.”

Hoffman gave a sneak peak into some of the bakery’s more popular products.

“Our menu, we try to keep it fresh; it switches just about every month,” she said. “We keep our staple items: blueberry scones, croissants; our strawberry shortcake and chocolate peanut butter cupcakes are our top sellers, (and) our chocolate chip cookies are always a huge hit.”

Other products include breads and gourmet pastries, and they also do custom orders.

Before it relocated, Hoffman said the business had most recently operated from the Lehighton Downtown Farmers Market.

“Everybody’s really excited and happy to have an actual bakery in the area; there are no other bakeries around aside from (Blended Bakery in) Lehighton,” she said. “We kind of filled that gap the Slatington area was lacking.”

Hoffman said the couple, who live in Palmerton, thought about opening up a food truck since it needed a commercial space to prepare the food in.

“We just happened to go to the Slatington Farmers Market, and they still had one space available and we kind of just decided to take the leap and go for it,” she said. “It’s been great support from the community, family and friends.”

Hoffman said the bakery has four employees, counting she and her husband, and added that one of the employees is a current co-op student at the Carbon Career and Technical Institute in Jim Thorpe.

“A lot of people miss us; we’re all the way over near the axe throwing area,” she said. “We have a great row of support. The people that we have in our row, the businesses are really great, hidden gems in the market.”

Hoffman, the founder of the company, has carried a passion for food and pastries from a young age. She started her career as a graduate (salutatorian) of CCTI in the culinary arts field, studied pastry arts at The Restaurant School of Walnut Hill College, and finished her studies at Lehigh Carbon Community College for Hospitality and Resort Management.

Her husband and business partner, Matt, handles the behind-the-scenes of the business. With a degree in business management and an extensive career in retail, he supports Connie by handling the clerical end of the bakery.

“We’re really excited to be a part of the farmers market; to have the opportunity to have a business,” Connie said. “I clearly love what I do; it’s nice to have that creative freedom.”

Hoffman said the bakery is more than your typical business.

“We do offer classes to teach people different things,” she said. “We like to work with local businesses and pair with them to create networking opportunities to promote other businesses.”

Hoffman said the Slatington Farmers Market is open Friday through Sunday. Wild & Free Bakery is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, and 5-9 p.m. the first Thursday of each month.
