Woman, dog escape Ross Township blaze

A woman and her dog escaped from a fire that broke out at a modular home Monday afternoon in Ross Township.

Paul Warnick, assistant fire chief, Blue Ridge Hook & Ladder Fire Company, said firefighters were dispatched at 12:45 p.m. to the home at the 2300 block of Woodhaven Drive.

“The front of the house was on fire, there was a vehicle on fire in the front yard driveway,” Warnick said. “The front porch was gone and it was burning well into the structure.”

Warnick said a woman was home at the time the fire started, but escaped and was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital for smoke inhalation.

He said there was also a dog in the house that escaped and went to a neighbor’s residence.

Warnick said it took firefighters a good hour to get the fire under control, and added they were there a little longer putting out hot spots.

He said they set up a fill site about a mile-and-a-half down the road to fill the tankers.

Warnick said the modular home is structurally deficient and a total loss, and that the Ross Township road department also assisted with helping to tear down part of the structure that collapsed.

He said the cause of the fire is to be determined by a state police fire marshal who was on scene Monday night.

Warnick said the West End Fire Company, Polk Township Fire Company, and Kunkletown Fire Company from Monroe County, along with the Wind Gap Fire Company and Plainfield Township Fire Company from Northampton County assisted, as did the West End EMS and State Police at Lehighton.

“We had a very quick response,” he said. “We had plenty of guys, plenty of water, plenty of tankers.”
