Monroe man charged with killing Lehigh Township man

A Monroe County man has been charged with killing a Lehigh Township man last summer.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Zachary McCornac of the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop M, Bethlehem barracks in the case against William Strunk:

At 5:52 p.m. June 29, members of the Lehigh Township Police Department were dispatched to a home in the of Lower Three Mile Lane, Lehigh Township, for a man found deceased within the residence.

Police entered the residence and discovered a 67-year-old man identified as Michael Powers deceased within the residence. Powers had multiple gunshot wounds to his body.

The Pennsylvania State Police, Bethlehem barracks was called. An autopsy was later completed on June 30 at the Northampton County Forensics Center which revealed that the cause of Powers’ death was determined to be homicide.

Four lead bullets were extracted from Powers’ body, and were sent to the PSP Bethlehem Regional Laboratory for analysis. Three were identified to match a .38/.357 caliber class.

During the course of the investigation, Strunk, 75, was identified as a possible suspect in the murder of Powers.

On March 22, a search warrant was served on Strunk’s apartment in the 700 block of Ann Street, Stroudsburg. A .38 caliber handgun was located within the residence, which was the same caliber firearm that was used to kill Powers.

Additionally, a box of ammunition was located within Strunk’s residence which contained .38 caliber ammunition with similar composition of the bullets extracted from Powers’ body at autopsy.

On March 22, Strunk was interviewed at the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office and related that he shot and killed Powers using the .38 caliber gun located within his residence.

Strunk confirmed that he shot Powers four times.

Police noted that Strunk does not have a valid license to carry a firearm.

Strunk faces charges of criminal homicide, possessing instrument of crime with intent, and firearm not to be carried without license.

Strunk is currently incarcerated in the Northampton County Prison with bail denied, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing April 10 before District Judge Robert A. Hawke of Walnutport.
