Local Roundup: Results from March 24

Palmerton’s baseball and softball teams remained undefeated after wins on Friday.

The Blue Bomber teams both edged Catasauqua.

Northwestern’s softball squad also stayed perfect with a victory over Salisbury.

BASEBALL

Palmerton-Catasauqua

Trey Sterling had a big offensive game to help lift Palmerton to a 10-7 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

Sterling finished with four hits, one a double, knocked in four runs and scored twice. One of his hits came during a six-run fourth inning that gave the Blue Bombers a lead they would not relinquish.

Jacob Grammes, the game’s winning pitcher, added a pair of hits and three RBIs, while Daniel Lucykanish contributed two hits and scored three runs.

The win upped the Bombers’ record to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the league.

CMVT-Weatherly

Jack James was dominant on the mound to lead Weatherly to a 6-1 win over Columbia Montour Vo-Tech.

James tossed a complete game, striking out 13 and surrendering five hits on the mound while also going 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Wyatt Higgins had an RBI double for the Wreckers (1-2), who scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to snap a 1-1 tie. Ismail Zuberi added a hit and knocked in two runs. Ian McLaurin also collected a hit and knocked in a run.

Shenandoah Vy.-Lehighton

Shenandoah Valley turned back Lehighton for a 7-4 win.

The Blue Devils (2-1) built a 7-1 lead after four innings. Nicholas Ryan finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored in the win, while Chase McCole also added a hit and an RBI.

The Indians (2-2) pushed across three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, and outhit Shenandoah 7-6 in the contest. Aiden Rarick finished 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored. Adam Bastone also had a hit and drove in a run.

Dallas picked up a 6-1 non-league win over Jim Thorpe.

Gary Weaver tossed 5 2/3 innings of two-hit ball, striking out seven while allowing just three walks. Jude Nocito had a double and two RBIs in the win. Gavin Adamski also doubled and scored a run.

Rich Strack, Nikolas Schwartz and Adam Romanchik had hits for the Olympians (1-2), who surrendered five unearned runs.

Nazareth-Pleasant Valley

Jake Dally powered Nazareth to a 14-2 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Dally tossed a four-hitter, didn’t allow any earned runs and struck out nine to earn the win. At the plate, he collected a double and a homer, and four RBIs.

The winners also received a pair of hits and three runs from Preston Warne.

For the Bears, who lost for the first time this season and are now 2-1, Nathan Loch had two hits and knocked in both of his team’s runs.

SOFTBALL

Palmerton-Catasauqua

Palmerton went deep to outlast Catasauqua for a 10-8 Colonial League win.

The Bombers (3-0) hit five home runs in the game, with Sydney Frantz, Megan Matsko, Emily Christopher, Hannah Barry and Hailey Delgado all leaving the yard for the Bombers, who pounded out 15 hits and stayed unbeaten to start the season. Frantz finished 3-for-4 with a double and triple, while also scoring three runs. Matsko added a triple among her three hits and had two RBIs with a run scored. Madison Green (double, RBI, run scored), Barry (two runs scored, RBI) and Christopher (two RBIs, run scored) all finished with two hits apiece.

Nayeska Miranda had a home run and two hits for the Roughies (0-2). Sophia Becker had two hits, three runs scored and an RBI, and Delaney Troxell (run scored) added a double while Jane Armbruster had a hit and three RBIs.

Salisbury-Northwestern

Northwestern continued its torrid start to the season, topping Salisbury 10-0 in five innings for a Colonial League win.

Isabelle Akelaitis and Abby Dunstan each had two doubles and an RBI for the Tigers (3-0), who have scored 37 runs in their first three games. Rylee McGinley was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Marissa Christman added a double among her two hits and an RBI. Starter Payton Neumoyer struck out five in four innings of work, allowing three hits, while Emma Freeman pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Elizabeth Carney was 2-for-2 with a walk for the Falcons (1-2).

Palisades-No. Lehigh

A pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning lifted Palisades to a 3-1 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh.

The Pirates (2-0) scored both runs with two outs. A single from Erin Wallblich scored K. Mayers to snap the 1-1 tie before Rhiley Poniktera doubled home Ailish Kelleher to make it 3-1. Karlye Teman, who went the distance to earn the win in the circle with five strikeouts, had a home run among her two hits in the win.

After a single by Arabella Heintzelman and a walk from Haylie Fenstermaker, Jordyn Hemingway was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases. But Teman got a ground ball to end it and secure the win. Fenstermaker and Kaitlyn Stock both doubled for the Bulldogs (1-2).

Linc. Leadership-J. Thorpe

Melina Schwartz and Amanda Goodchild combined on a one-hitter and Jim Thorpe took advantage of 12 walks to post a 10-0 non-league victory over Lincoln Leadership.

Schwartz gave up one hit in three innings and struck out six, while Goodchild tossed two hitless frames and fanned five.

Oleska McAndrew and Tara McLean both finished with a hit, run and RBI for Thorpe (1-1). Kaylyn Costello added a hit and two RBIs, and Isabella Lloyd chipped in with a hit and a run.

Nazareth-Pleasant Valley

Avery Kauffman pitched a four-hitter and struck out 14 to lead Nazareth to a 9-2 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

The Blue Eagle hurler allowed just one earned run and didn’t issue any walks.

Alina Weaver hit a home run for the winners, now 1-1, and knocked in two runs. Natalie Chloros also had two RBIs, while Cassie Zellner finished with two hits and scored a pair of runs.

For the Bears, who dropped to 1-2, Jovie Valenzuela and Brianca Pridham both had a hit and an RBI. Valenzuela, whose hit was a double, also scored a run. Hailey Krock chipped in with a double and a run scored.

Panther Valley-Nativity

Emily Krammes pitched and hit Nativity to a 12-3 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

Krammes tossed a four-hitter and struck out 11. At the plate, she had three hits - one a homer - and knocked in six runs.

The winners, now 1-0, also received three hits from Caelan Quick.

For PV, which dropped to 0-1, Mikayla Yuricheck had a double and an RBI while Morgan O’Brien added a single and an RBI.

TENNIS

Jim Thorpe-Bangor

Bangor swept Jim Thorpe 5-0.

Jonathan Frank, Kaden Dowd and Caleb Atkinson won the three singles matches for the Slaters (3-1), while Justin McNeely and Hayden Burns posted a win in the only contested doubles match.

With the loss, the Olympians fall to 0-3 on the season.
