Nesquehoning issues 30-day burn ban

Brush fire season is upon us and Nesquehoning is fighting back.

On Wednesday, borough council voted, on the recommendation of the three borough fire chiefs, to issue a 30-day burn ban, effective Monday.

John McArdle, borough emergency management coordinator and Nesquehoning Hose Company fire chief, said that brush fire season has begun earlier than normal because of the dry winter.

McArdle said that the borough had a brush fire started Tuesday that almost affected two homes.

A resident, McArdle said, was outside burning and ended up setting his backyard on fire that spread to a nearby structure.

“It’s very dry,” he said. “We had a very dry winter.”

Residents are asked to refrain from burning for the next 30 days. The ban will then be reviewed to see if an extension is needed.
