Truck takes down wires on 54

Route 54 in Ryan Township was shut down in both directions just after 4 p.m. Sunday when a garbage truck took down a utility pole near Lakeside Beverage.

The stretch of road between Grier Avenue and Tuscarora Mountain Drive might not reopen until sometime Tuesday, emergency responders said.

While PPL Electric Utilities responded within an hour to replace its line, Frontier Communications has yet to do so.

“The rest of the lines that are laying/partially hanging over the road are owned by Frontier Communications. They have been advised multiple times of the incident and have not responded to the scene,” Ryan Township Deputy Chief Matt Morgan said on social media. “Their last response is they can get here March 14th.”

Because of the closure, Mahanoy Area School District canceled in-person learning on Monday and opted for a virtual route.

Road closure signs and detours have been posted, and the area is listed on the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s road closure site.
