PV’s Banks is state champ

Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks punctuated a stellar postseason performance with a state championship on Sunday, winning the 235-pound weight class at the 2023 MyHouse PA Girls State Wrestling Championships.

After a dominant run to the East Regional title last week, the Panthers’ freshman rolled to the title at Central Dauphin High School with pins in three of her four matches.

Her third fall of the tournament came in 2:27 against South Western’s Kayla Henderson to secure the title.

Banks reached the final with an injury default (4:03) win over Emma Lukenich (Brandywine Heights) in her first match, before pinning Alaina Claassen (Plum) in 1:39 in the quarters and Ajanai Jumper (Cumberland Valley) in 1:20 to reach the finals.

The freshman won both of her matches at the regional tournament last week with pins in under a minute.

Northwestern Lehigh’s Katie Brensinger placed third at 142 pounds at the event Sunday.

Brensinger - who also won a title at last week’s East Regional - advanced to the semifinals with a major decision over Katalyna Borreli (Tulpehocken High School), 10-1, and a fall against Grace O`Korn (Peters Township) in 3:15.

She bounced back from a 10-0 loss to Zoey Haines (Gettysburg) in the semis by topping Kyra Rau (Cumberland Valley) 6-0 in the consolation semis before a 6-4 win in sudden victory overtime against Naylee Ierley (York Suburban) in the third-place match.

Pleasant Valley’s Lily Decker and Lehighton’s Maggie Pagotto each went 1-2 at the tournament.

After receiving a bye into the second round, Pagotto, who was third at last week’s regional tournament, was pinned by eventual runner-up Kacie Mook (Saegertown) in 3:21 in the second round. She received a bye into the third round of consolations, where she pinned Brenna Collery (North Allegheny) in 2:24.

Pagotto fell to Cumberland Valley’s Mari Bruscino by fall in 2:01 in her next consolation match.

Decker was pinned in 5:51 by Henderson in her second round match at 235 pounds after receiving a bye in the first round. After a bye into the third round of consolations, Decker, also third at the regional tournament last week, pinned Amya Sanford (North Allegheny) in 4:02.

She dropped a 3-0 decision to Kaylee Dean (North Allegheny) in her next consolation bout.
