Friends group asks for Palmerton dog park events

Fido and Lucy may have even more chances to roll around in the grass and frolic at Palmerton’s recently opened dog park in the West End of town.

Lisa Snell Kern, president of Friends of the Palmerton Dog Park, shared several ideas she has for events at the park with borough council on Thursday.

“Our goal is to just add some small things to the dog park,” Snell Kern said.

Snell Kern said they’d like to have several events, such as Egg Hunt for dogs, along with several other holiday-themed activities.

“The dog park has really added a lot for us even as people,” she said.

Snell Kern then asked if they could look to have the dog park being a subcommittee that would report to the borough’s recreation committee.

Council did not take any action on her request.

Earlier this month, Councilman Andrew Hollywood asked visitors to the borough’s recently opened dog park to clean up after their pets.

Hollywood said at that time that there were some concerns expressed recently with the dog park at the West End Recreation Association.

He said users of the dog park have been leaving the gates open when they leave at night.

Hollywood stressed that it’s important for people to clean up after their animals.

He then asked if council should look into seeding the area. This was recommended by the group of volunteers who have started meeting to discuss development and care of the dog park.

Hollywood suggested possibly blocking off sections when they are seeded; otherwise seeded areas won’t grow if dogs are allowed to run.

Chris Lipfert, owner of Lipfert Lawn and Fence Inc., donated his time and materials to install fencing.

Braun Bleamer, owner of Jet Signs, donated time and materials for signs.

A dedication of the dog park at Alley J, above portions of the 800 and 900 blocks of Edgemont Avenue, was held in November.
