Tigers’ Fugazzotto is top seed in Class 2A

Northwestern’s Luke Fugazzotto has earned a No. 1 seed for this weekend’s District 11 wrestling tournament.

The Tigers’ freshman is the top seed at 160 pounds in the Class 2A bracket. He will face the winner of Raphael Dinarte (Jim Thorpe)-Carson Lengle (Pine Grove) match in the first round.

Fugazzotto has enjoyed a stellar season, capturing the Colonial League title at 160 pounds in late January.

A pair of Fugazzotto’s teammates will be seeded third in the event. State qualifiers a year ago for the Tigers, both Dalton Clymer (172) and Northwestern’s Lucas Miller (189) are No. 3 seeds for the Tigers.

Clymer will face the winner of Nikolas Zaharick (North Schuylkill)-Mergim Bushati (Panther Valley) in the first round, while Miller will take on the winner of the Donovan Herman (Mahanoy)-Connor Smalley (Notre Dame Green Pond) bout in the quarterfinals. Two Tamaqua wrestlers are also seeded third. Gabe Erbe will face Mahanoy’s Victor Hanley in his 121-pound first round match, while Jacob Schlier will see Jim Thorpe’s Cael Heaney in his 152-pound first round contest.

A district finalist and state qualifier a year ago, Lehighton’s Aidan Gruber is the third seed at 114 pounds and will wrestle Pine Grove’s Camber Boyer in the first round.

Two of Gruber’s teammates are seeded fourth for the event. Evan Wentz will take on Tamaqua’s Chase Zeigenfuss in his 133-pound first round match, while Reese Balk will wrestle Williams Valley’s Cameron Green in his 285-pound first round match.

Palmerton’s Derek King is also seeded fourth at 139 pounds and will wrestle Salisbury’s Jordan Tocci-Wachter in the first round.

In Class 3A, a pair of Pleasant Valley wrestlers are seeded sixth. Eddie Lauritsen will wrestle East Stroudsburg South’s Daniel Montero in his 121-pound first round match, while Jimmy Barruzza will wrestle Parkland’s Julius Reyes in a 215-pound first round match.

The first day of the Class 2A tournament will be held Friday at Freedom High School, while the opening day of the 3A event will take place at Liberty High School. The pigtails and preliminary round will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the quarterfinals, which will start no earlier than 6:30 p.m. in both classes. The opening day will conclude with first round consolations at 7:30 p.m.

The second day of competition on Saturday begins with second round consolations at 9 a.m., followed by semifinals and third round consolations, which will start no earlier than 10:15. The fourth round consolations will take place at 11:45 a.m.

The finals and consolation finals will take place at Liberty High School for both classes.

The third- and fifth-place matches will take place at 3 p.m., followed by the Parade of Champions at 4:30 and the championship finals at 4:45.

There will be four wrestlers in Class 2A advancing to the Southeast Regional Tournament, while five will move on from 3A to the Northeast Regional the following week.
