Man said he ‘blacked out’ before truck hit building

A Lehighton man who crashed his pickup truck into Country Tile in South Tamaqua told police he blacked out before the 4:23 p.m. Sunday accident.

Tamaqua police said Robert G. Piepmeyer Jr., of German Road, was traveling north on Route 309 when he drove across all lanes of travel. His vehicle hit several railroad ties, and crossed a parking lot before it struck the south side of Country Tile.

Police said the vehicle fully entered the building before coming to rest.

Two witnesses said they were traveling behind Piepmeyer and told officers he was driving normally until he crossed the highway. They told police that they didn’t see brake lights.

Police said Piepmeyer was sitting in the passenger side of the vehicle. He told police he remembered coughing and then blacking out. The impact pushed him to the side, and he was complaining of pain in his left hip and leg.

Police said medics asked Piepmeyer if he had anything to drink, and he said he had a few beers hours earlier at his home.

He was taken by helicopter to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

The Tamaqua Fire Department and Tamaqua Fire Police assisted. The vehicle was removed by Hope’s Towing.

No charges have been filed as of Tuesday.
