Lehighton to advertise zoning ordinance

Lehighton has agreed to advertise its zoning ordinance and map.

After holding a second public hearing, borough council voted unanimously on Monday to approve advertising the draft zoning ordinance. No one in attendance spoke to the matter.

In December, council said it planned to hold another public hearing on its zoning ordinance and map.

At that time, council deliberated if it should advertise the ordinance and map, but solicitor Jim Nanovic said it would have to hold another public hearing first.

In November, council on a 4-2 vote decided against the measure.

That action came after council again heard from Robert March, president of Standard Metal Industries, 500 S. Ninth St.

March said he believes his business, along with a neighboring business, MB Bridge Real Estate, would be affected.

March added that one of his businesses may not be able to continue, and that he may have to re-purpose it so that it would fit into the new ordinance.

Then borough engineer Bruce Steigerwalt said at that time that the zoning map was developed based on the most recent Federal Emergency Management Agency mapping from June.

He said that some of March’s building is in a flood plain.

March said he understood, but that it’s only a “tiny little section” of his property.

Steigerwalt said there was a detailed study done, and that a portion of the building “is still in the flood way.”
