How does your electric usage compare?

According to the latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average American household uses about 866 kilowatt-hours of electricity each month, or about 10,632 kilowatt-hours per year.

Customers’ electric usage, reported in kilowatt hours, can be found on bills as a totals for the month and past year.

“Louisiana had the highest annual electricity consumption at 14,302 kWh per residential customer, and Hawaii had the lowest at 6,369 kWh per residential customer,” the EIA reported.

The administration notes that the highest electric guzzlers are air conditioning, 17%; space heating, 15%, and water heating, 14%.

The average amounts of fuel used by U.S. electric utilities and independent power producers to generate a kilowatt hour of electricity are coal, 1.12 pounds; natural gas, 7.36 cubic feet; petroleum liquids, 0.08 gallons, and petroleum coke, 0.82 pounds, according to the EIA.
