Nesquehoning Borough Council
Nesquehoning Borough Council conducted the following business during its monthly meeting on Wednesday.
• Regretfully accepted the resignation of Mary Arieta as code enforcement officer for the borough and said a letter of thanks would be sent.
Council also approved increasing the part-time code enforcement officer hourly salary to $15 per hour, not to exceed 20 hours a week. This is due to the amount of work that is required by the officer.
Applications for the position will now be accepted and anyone interested in serving in this position can apply.
• Mayor Tom Kattner commended the borough crew for their preparation during the recent snowstorm.
• Voted to advertise three street projects for 2023: West Columbus Avenue, East Mussmano and Marconi Avenues. Council said that based on the new plan for road repaving, the borough is able to stretch the number of streets it can do during a project. It was also noted that there was a $30,000 savings on last year’s street projects, which is helping to cover this year’s projects.
• Approved advertising for a borough worker with a CDL license to fill a vacancy in the department.
• Reappointed Brior Environmental Services Inc. for sewer department services as needed.
• Approved the purchase of a snow blower for the water authority and borough crew at a cost of $850. The cost will be split between the water authority and borough.
• Reminded residents to check the borough website near holidays for any changes to garbage pickup dates.
• Nesquehoning is planning to take part in National Night Out this August.
• Approved advertising for bids for the Johnson & Jacobs Memorial Park project.
• Approved rolling over the CDs the borough has into new CDs at Jim Thorpe Neighborhood bank for a 1-year rate of 4.19%. The current rates of the CDs the borough has are between 0.5 and 0.8%.
• Appointed Paul Kattner to the water authority board.
• Sam Kitchko, borough representative for the Council of Governments, brought a request from the COG on a recent discussion about adopting a sludge dumping regulation ordinance in all municipalities. The ordinance is due to a battle in East Penn Township regarding sludge dumping on a farm.
• The borough planning commission will hold a meeting on the plans for 227-229 E. Catawissa St., at 6 p.m. on Feb. 7.
