Carbon driver faces DUI charges after fleeing crash scene

A Carbon County driver is facing charges following an incident that occurred on Jan. 21 and started in Lehigh County and ended in Schuylkill County.

State police at Bethlehem said the incident began at 9:28 a.m. along Route 309 in North Whitehall Township. Troopers said Emily A. Ahner, 34, of Lehighton, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu northbound and struck the rear of a 2015 Buick Verano operated by Dass S. Prakasam, 83, of Whitehall, who was stopped a for a traffic signal at Sand Spring Road.

Police said Ahner got out of her car, assessed the damage, got back in her car and fled northbound. A passenger with Prakasam, Eileen K. Reiss, 75, of Whitehall, was injured and taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest.

Troopers said a time later Ahner was pulled over by West Penn Township police in Schuylkill County and taken into custody. She was evaluated by medical personnel but refused transport. She was then turned over to Bethlehem troopers and taken to the barracks.

She was later taken to the Lehigh County prison in Allentown for processing and charges filed. She has been charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, accident involving death or personal injuries while not properly licensed, accident involving death of personal injuries and several other motor vehicle code summary offenses. She was initially jailed but later was bonded out, according to court records.
