Man charged after high-speed chase in West Penn Twp.

West Penn Township police nabbed a Philadelphia man after a high-speed chase on Route 309 Monday.

Damian Lamar Johnson, 28, was charged with misuse of a license plate, fleeing and eluding a police officer, escape, possession of marijuana, reckless driving, causing an accident involving damage to attended property, and operating a vehicle without financial responsibility.

The incident unfolded when police stopped a black Chrysler 300 for suspended registration and insurance cancellation.

As the police approached the vehicle drove off at a high rate of speed, exceeding 90 mph before crashing into a guard rail, retaining wall, and trash cans. The driver went back onto Route 309 and sped away, leaving a trail of auto parts on the road. He continued at a high rate of speed until a large trail of black smoke discharged from the exhaust and the vehicle’s hood flew up in front of the windshield.

The vehicle stopped in a ditch at the intersection of Route 309 and Bolich Road, and the driver was ordered out of the vehicle.

A search found drugs, and the property of 2003 West Penn Pike (Route 309) was badly damaged.

The driver, Johnson, was taken into custody and sent to Schuylkill County prison under $25,000 straight bail.
