Pleasant Vy. HOF to induct five

Pleasant Valley will welcome five new members into its Hall of Fame class on Friday, Jan. 13.

Jake Percey, Jocelyn (Novak) Masotti, Bob Pipech III, Marie Conklin Young and Douglas C. Arnold will be honored at the ceremony, which will take place at halftime of the boys basketball game against Stroudsburg and is expected to take place at approximately 7:30 p.m.

JAKE PERCEY

Jake is a retired teacher and athletic director from Pleasant Valley School District. He is a 1983 graduate of Benton High School. Upon graduation he attended Bloomsburg University where he earned BS in Secondary Education with a concentration in Earth and Space Science. After Jake graduated he started his career with the State College School District as an Earth and Space high school teacher. He then moved to the North Penn School District for two years as an eighth-grade Science teacher. Then in August of 1990 he accepted a position with the Pleasant Valley School District as an Earth and Space Science teacher. Jake then obtained his Master of Science degree from West Chester University. He would continue teaching and coaching until he became the Athletic Director for Pleasant Valley School District. During all of his years at PV, Jake took on many roles such as soccer coach, assistant JV baseball coach, announcer, event manager, track judge, scorekeeper, and many other various hats he wore while working in the district. Jake retired from education in June of 2021. Jake resides in Effort, with his wife Paulette for 34 years. They have two children; Jacob and Brandon.

Honors Received

During Jake’s time as an educator and athletic director, he received many honors for his commitment to his students and athletes. He was the Mountain Valley Conference soccer coach, of the year in 2000 and 2002. Also as the boys soccer coach he coached his team to a conference championship in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004. Jake was the MVC/EPC Athletic Director of the Year in 2007, 2012, and 2019.

JOCELYN (NOVAK) MASOTTI

Jocelyn is a 2008 graduate of Pleasant Valley High School. As a student at Pleasant Valley she was a member of the National Honor Society. As an athlete Jocelyn was a member of the field hockey and track and field teams all four years while attending PV. As a student athlete, she was a member of the National Scholar Athlete Association, Who’s Who Among High School Scholars, and Miss Teen of Pennsylvania Athlete Excellence Winner. Jocelyn also received honors from the Mountain Valley Conference as Rookie of the year and All Area First Teameam for field hockey. She also placed second in MVC and fifth in District 11 in discus throwing in track and field. After graduating from PV she attended Lebanon Valley College and received her bachelors in biology. While there she continued her passion for field hockey. During her time at LVC she was a four-year All American player, played overseas in France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, and Trinidad, and had her jersey retired on October 12, 2013. After her four years at LVC she continued her education at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore earning a Masters of Physician Assistant Degree. Currently, she is employed as a Pediatric Physician Assistant with Lehigh Valley Health Network Pediatrics Lehighton. She currently serves as a volunteer field hockey coach for Pleasant Valley. Jocelyn resides in Brodheadsville, with her husband Scott for five years. They have one child and one on the way.

Honors Received

During Jocelyn’s time in high school and college she excelled in as a student athlete. While at Pleasant Valley she was voted MVP for field hockey. After graduating from Pleasant Valley she continued achieving honors for playing field hockey at Lebanon Valley College. In 2008 she was named to the NFHCA Third-Team All-America and only freshman to be named to an All-American Squad. Then in 2009 Jocelyn made the Second-Team All-American, led the nation in goals with 35 and became the fastest player in LVC to reach 100-career points. In her junior year at LVC She made the NFHCA First-Team All-American and was recognized as the National Offensive MVP. In addition, Jocelyn had 39 goals during the season which was second most in NCAA Division III history. She ended her collegiate career as NCAA’s Division III all-time leader in goals with 141 and 300 points. She was also honored being the only Division III player to score 30-plus goals in four seasons. As a result Lebanon Valley College retired her jersey and she became the first female athlete in the history of the college to receive this recognition.

BOB PIPECH III

Bob is a 2002 graduate of Pleasant Valley School District. While at PV, Bob was active with National Honor Society, D.A.R.E. program, volunteering with the Special Olympics, and of course a member of the Boys’ Soccer team. As a member of the soccer team Bob earned a varsity letter three times. He was also one of the nominees for the Lehigh Valley Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year. After graduating PV, he attended Division 1 Saint Francis University earning BS in Secondary Education. He was a four-year starter for the men’s soccer team while at Saint Francis. In 2006 Bob started his educational career at Pleasant Valley High School then in 2008 with Pen Argyl Area School District as a Mathematics teacher. Most recently he has taken on the leadership role as Mathematics Department Chair for the high school. In addition to his teaching career Bob founded and is the current director of Dominate the 18 Goalkeeping and Soccer Training. Bob played four years semi-professional soccer with the PA Stoners and Pocono Snow of the National Premier Soccer League. Bob also holds two Masters Degrees form Wilkes University in Classroom Technology and Instructional Technology. Most recently he completed his Pennsylvania Administrative Certification from Delaware Valley University. Currently Bob is the assistant woman’s soccer coach at Muhlenberg College. Bob resides in Bethlehem with his wife Erin for four years. They have two children

Honors Received

Over the years Bob has been recognized for his accomplishments both on and off the field. While at Pleasant Valley Bob had 22 career shutouts and had a career record of 59-10. During his four years at Saint Francis, Bob was honored for his many achievements on the soccer field. Some of his Division I honors included most shutouts in a season (7), most shutouts in a career (15), and having the best Goals Against Average (0.78). In addition he was seventh in the nation in 2005 for his save percentage, ranked 19th in the nation in 2005 Goals Against Average, and ranked 13th nationally in 2003-04 Saves Per Game. In 2006, Bob was recognized by Saint Francis University as the Scholar-Athlete of the year. Professionally he holds many certificates in technology, Google Level 1, Google Level 2, EdPuzzle Coach, and EdPuzzle Flipped. Due to his professional develop in classroom technology he has had the honor to present at “Spring into Technology” conference at East Stroudsburg School District and at the 2018 Parkland Teacher Tech Conference.

MARIE CONKLIN YOUNG

Marie is a 1969 graduate of Pleasant Valley High School. While at Pleasant Valley Marie was active in many athletic and extracurricular clubs. She was a cheerleader and girls basketball team member in grades nine through eleven. In her senior year, she was selected co-captain. Additionally she was a member of the National Honor Society, Chorus, Girls Ensemble, County Chorus, and Yearbook staff. Marie went to West Chester University were she received her Bachelor of Science in Music Education with a vocal/choral concentration. She continued her education taking Graduate classes at Cornell University, University of Scranton, Ithaca College, and Millersville University. Professionally, Marie taught music education at Palisades, Stroudsburg, and Pocono Mountain School Districts. She continues her joy of music education by offering private instruction to students in piano and voice. Marie resides in Berwyn with her husband Alan for 47 years. They have two children.

Honors Received

As an educator Maria was very active outside of the classroom, she directed the school chorus, special ensembles and put on evening concerts for the community. In 1972 she had the opportunity to the choreographer for the Pleasant Valley High School’s first musical, “The Ballad of Braun Michael.” Marie also participated as a camp counselor for PV’s overnight band camp. She has also been an adjudicator for The National Federation of Music Clubs Music Festival held at East Stroudsburg University since 1990. In addition to her work in education she was very active in her community. She was a member of the Monroe County Historical Association, where she was the chairperson for membership and Founder and Chairperson for the association’s major fundraiser, “Raise Your Glass & Support the Past.” She was also a committee member for Monroe County Cancer Society, board member for the Pocono Mountain Concert Series and Buck Hill Community Services Committee and Treasurer.

DOUGLAS C. ARNOLD

Doug is a 1974 graduate of Pleasant Valley High School. Doug went on to Kutztown University, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Special Education and Elementary Education and graduated summa cum laude. He earned his Master of Education in Secondary Administration from East Stroudsburg University and his Ph.D. in Education Administration from Marywood University, receiving the McGowan Medal for Excellence in Doctoral Studies. During his career, Doug held several different teaching and administrative positions, but his most recent, before retiring, was Pleasant Valley’s Superintendent of Schools, a position he held from 2007-2013. He is currently the Executive Director of the National Association of Pupil Services Administrators and its Pennsylvania affiliate, the Pennsylvania Association of Pupil Services Administrators. While at Pleasant Valley, Doug was the president of the National Junior Honor Society, a member of the National Society, and was recognized by Who’s Who. He also played football and was named the school’s scholar athlete. He received All-League honors and was a team captain. During Doug’s time as an educator, he served on several different educational organizations such as the Executive Board of the National Association of Pupil Services, Executive Board of Pennsylvania Association of Pupil Services, Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators, National Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals, and The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Doug was also involved in multiple community service efforts such as Salvation Advisory Board, where he served as Chairman, Advisory Board for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and West End Park and Open Space Commission, where he also served as chairman. Doug is also Vice President of the Monroe County Historical Association, along with being a member of the Monroe County Children’s Roundtable. Doug coached high school football for 20 years and was a part of nine championship teams. Doug resides in Brodheadsville with his wife Dora. They have two children; Derek and Dennis.

Honors Received

Doug received the A. Mitchell Palmer Award, which is the highest community service award bestowed upon an individual within Monroe County. Doug also received the William Booth Award, one of the highest awards conferred upon an individual by The Salvation Army. Doug was inducted into the East Stroudsburg Meritorious Hall of Fame in 2008. Doug also received the Family and Community Service Award from the Rotary Club of the Stroudsburgs.
