Santa, police bring cheer to 3-year-old cancer patient

Christmas came early this year for one 3-year-old boy.

Before he delivered gifts to all, Santa made a pit-stop at the Lehighton Police Station.

His objective was to bring the holiday to Mason Post-Bowers, 3, of Lehighton, who has cancer.

Santa met with Mason at the police station, where they were met by Lehighton police Detective Matt Arner, along with officers Joel Gulla and Ivan Centeno.

Kathy Henderson, Mason’s grandmother, said that Mason “just adores Lehighton Santa.”

“At Lehighton’s Vintage Hometown Christmas, Father Christmas asked Mason to write down what he wanted for Christmas,” Henderson said. “My daughter-in-law wrote the note down for him, normal things like kids would want; he said that what he would really like is for his cancer to be gone, and not to have to go through any more scans.”

Henderson said Mason has a tumor on his one kidney, which was discovered when he was six months old.

She said Mason had been an in-patient at Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia for a month, but has since been transferred to The Children’s Cancer and Multipurpose Infusion Center at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital in Allentown since it’s closer to home.

“The tumor is still there,” Henderson said. “They can’t operate on it because it’s too risky of a surgery.”

Henderson said the family was so moved by the kindhearted gesture.

“We’re just so grateful for the people who donated gifts and gift cards to him through the police department and through Lehighton Santa, and their photographer, Stacey Hines,” she said. “They made that little boy’s day; he was beaming from ear to ear.

“They put him in the police car, he was blaring the siren. “One donation or contribution was a Spider Man bicycle; you couldn’t get him off of it.”

Arner said that Mason’s request “really hit Santa really hard.”

“He is such a great kid,” Arner said. “To see the smile on his face was priceless.”
