Marian, Northwestern and Panther Valley all posted wins in girls basketball action on Saturday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

S. Williamsport-Marian

Marian opened its season on the right foot by pulling away from South Williamsport for a 67-44 non-conference victory.

The Fillies shot 23-of-28 from the free throw line, including 14-of-18 in the final quarter, to seal the win.

Frankie Martinelli led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points, while Kerrigan Digris contributed 13. Marian (1-0) also received 11 points from Ashley Pleban and 10 from Addison Fritz.

The Mountaineers’ Aleigha Rieppel scored a team-high 12 points.

Whitehall-N’western

A strong second half powered Northwestern to a 55-35 non-conference victory over Whitehall.

Tied 21-21 at the break, the Tigers (1-0) outscored their opponent by a 34-14 margin over the final two quarters.

Northwestern’s Cara Thomas scored nine of her game-high 13 points in the second half, while teammates Hannah Gober and Paige Sevrain both finished with 11.

The Zephyrs (0-1) received a team-high 10 points from Morgan Dunbar.

Maddison Maynard poured in a game-high 31 points to lead Panther Valley to a 67-51 non-league victory over Schuylkill Haven.

Maynard tallied nine of her points in the third quarter as the Panthers (1-1) extended a nine-point halftime lead to 54-36 entering the final frame.

PV’s Morgan Orsulak contributed 17 points, while Sera Robin added 12.

The Hurricanes (0-1) received 14 points from both Abree Brown and Olivia Dress.

Tamaqua-ES South

East Stroudsburg South built a lead with a big third quarter and then held off Tamaqua for a 37-35 victory in the consolation game of the Tamaqua Tip-Off Tournament.

The Cavaliers outscored the hosts 14-4 in that third frame to turn a deficit into a 28-23 advantage.

Kendle Miller had a double-double for the Blue Raiders, finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Lorelei Plasha also collected 13 boards for Tamaqua (0-2).

For Eastburg South, Layla Hernandez tallied a game-high 20 pointss.

Jim Thorpe-Minersville

In a game from Friday night, Minersville rolled past Jim Thorpe by a 52-23 score.

The Miners held the Olympians scoreless in the second quarter in gaining a 32-6 halftime lead.

Taylor Conti had 13 points to lead Minersville, while Keera Brennan and Kayree Raczka both finished with 12 points.

For Thorpe, Mackenzie Yuhas scored a team-high 13 points.

Northampton-N’western

Northwestern gained a halftime lead, but then the wheels fell off in the second half in dropping a 58-30 non-league decision to Northampton.

The Konkrete Kids rebounded from a 21-18 deficit by outscoring the Tigers 40-9 over the final two quarters.

Cayden Fitch had nine points to lead Northwestern (0-1) while Gavin Nelson chipped in with seven.

Northampton was paced by Jonathan Kolumber and Tyler Kauffman, who both finished with 10 points.

NL-Annville Cleona

Northern Lehigh struggled offensively, eventually dropping a 45-26 decision to Annville-Cleona in the consolation game of the Hamburg Area Tip-Off Tournament.

The Bulldogs mustered only 11 points in the first half as the Dutchmen gained a nine-point advantage at the break. Annville-Cleona then used a 16-8 third frame to take control of the contest.

Connor Simms scored 13 points to lead Nolehi (0-2), while Bryce LoPinto also reached double figures with 11.

For the Dutchmen, Elisha Slabach finished with a game-high 17 points.

WRESTLING

Jim Thorpe, NW at Catasauqua Rough Rider Tournament

Northwestern’s Lucas Miller won the 189-pound championship at the Catasauqua Rough Rider Tournament.

Miller pinned all four of his opponents to gain the title. He registered falls of seven and 40 seconds in the first two rounds before posting a 1:53 pin in the semifinals. Against Josh Ryan of Lake Lehman in the finals, Miller secured gold with a fall at 3:27.

The Tigers, who placed sixth in the team standings, also received runner-up finishes from Dalton Clymer at 172 and from Luke Fugazzotto at 160.

Jim Thorpe’s Steven Korte was third at 114, while Ridge Snyder placed fourth at 139.
