The high school football season officially came to an end on Saturday for teams in the Times News coverage area as Northern Lehigh and Northwestern Lehigh both suffered losses in the quarterfinal round of the PIAA state tournament.

The Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaking 42-35 decision to Steelton-Highspire in the Class 1A playoffs as the Rollers scored the game-winning touchdown with just :04 remaining. NL had tied the back-and-forth contest with :27 left in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass and two-point conversion.

Northern Lehigh finishes its season with a 12-2 record.

Meanwhile, the Tigers fell to Neumann-Goretti, 38-6, in the Class 3A playoffs. Trailing 16-0 at halftime, Northwestern scored midway through the third quarter to make it interesting. But NG scored the game’s final three touchdowns to pull away.

Northwestern finishes the season with an 11-3 record.
