Driver ejected through convertible roof in crash

The driver of a vehicle that was involved in a crash at 1:42 p.m. Oct. 23 on Route 209 in Hamilton Township was ejected from the open roof of his convertible and transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, Bethlehem, according to state police at the Stroudsburg barracks.

Police said Scott R. Heykoop, 18, of Stroudsburg, was thrown from his 2000 Ford Mustang and transported by the Suburban Ambulance personnel to the hospital. Police said he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A passenger in the car, Lillian Gerenday, 18, of Saylorsburg, suffered suspected minor injuries and was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono, East Stroudsburg, police said.

Police said the crash occurred when Heykoop was traveling north on Route 209 and a 2015 Toyota Sienna was driven southbound by Ivan Ruan, 19, of Stroudsburg. Police said Heykoop was driving at a high rate of speed around a curve and a vehicle was northbound directly in front of the two vehicles.

Police said Heykoop did not see the vehicle and attempted to drive in the southbound lane to avoid striking the sedan while Ruan was in the southbound lane of travel. Police said when Heykoop drove into the south lane, the two vehicles sideswiped each other, at which time Heykoop swerved back into his lane of travel, losing control of the Mustang. It traveled up an embankment on the north side of the road, where it struck a tree and began to turn over as it descended the embankment. The car came to rest off the south shoulder of the road, landing on its wheels.

Ruan was uninjured. His car did not require towing.

Police said Heykoop was cited for the crash.
