Carbon plans weeklong schedule to honor veterans

Carbon County wants to show the 5,400 veterans living in the county that it supports them.

On Thursday, the county commissioners reminded residents that beginning on Nov. 6 through Nov. 13, Carbon County is participating in the Operation Green Light for Veterans and is urging all residents to change one light bulb in or on their house to green as a show of support for area veterans.

Commissioner Chris Lukasevich pointed out that Carbon County led the way in this new national initiative by becoming the first county to sign on to become a Green Light for Veterans County.

He added that the county veterans affairs office, led by Christine LeClair, has done a wonderful job supporting the veterans in various ways, including helping filing the necessary forms for benefits, partnering with St. Luke’s to bring in a veterans hub for counseling services in Lehighton, and providing spouses and their families with information that helps a veteran.

“We want to ensure our veterans recognize that we see them, we hear them, we appreciate them and we support them,” Lukasevich said.

Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that he already purchased his green light and urged everyone to do the same.

“It’s a worthy project,” he said.

In addition to Operation Green Light, Carbon County has a full week of events geared to honoring veterans and bringing them together.

The week kicks off on Sunday with the annual Carbon County Veterans Day Parade, held this year in Palmerton. It will begin at 2 p.m.

At 10 a.m. on Nov. 7, the county will kick off #OperationGreenLight with a Veterans Day service in Josiah White Park. Palmerton police Chief and U.S. Army Veteran Timothy Kromer will be the keynote speaker for the event. All are invited.

From 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 8, veterans who signed up will enjoy a dinner and beach campfire at Mauch Chunk Lake Park. Bring your camp chair.

A ruck march Walk with a Veteran is planned for 7 a.m. on Nov. 9 at Mauch Chunk Lake Park.

Together With Veterans NEPA, partnering with St. Luke’s University Health Network, will celebrate the grand opening of Carbon County’s Veterans Hub of Northeastern PA at St. Luke’s Lehighton campus at 1 p.m. on Nov. 10.

All are welcome to see the new hub, located in the main lobby entrance at 211 N. 12th St.

Later that evening, Together With Veterans will welcome veterans and a guest to Penn’s Peak for a Veterans Day dinner.

Carbon Career & Technical Institute in Jim Thorpe also will hold a Veterans Day Assembly at 9 a.m. on Nov. 11 in the school cafeteria. Veterans are invited to attend by RSVPing to the school at 570-325-3682, ext. 1500. Deadline to RSVP is Monday.
