Pink Light Walk rained out, but breast cancer fight goes on

Gloomy conditions may have marred the actual walk itself.

But, that wasn’t enough to derail the spirits of the roughly 150 participants who came together for the 17th annual Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club Pink Light Walk Tuesday at the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall.

Participants were asked to wear a pink shirt to increase awareness of breast cancer and show their support for all survivors.

Due to the inclement weather, the walk to the Lehighton Upper Park Amphitheater did not take place.

Brenda Green, vice president of the Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club, said she was pleased with the showing.

“Considering the weather, I think we have an excellent turnout,” Green said. “I love to see the people share their stories.”

Marsha Estep, member of the Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club and the emergency department director for St. Luke’s Carbon Campus, welcomed those in attendance.

“This event is about saving lives, breast cancer awareness, and breast cancer treatment,” Estep said.

This year’s speaker was Dr. Ali Butash, general surgeon/surgical oncologist with St. Luke’s Health System, Carbon Campus.

Butash focused her presentation on breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment.

“Screening is super important,” Butash said. “Getting the word out, trying to get the myths dispelled, is very important.”

The event raises funds for the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition.

There was a huge basket raffle drawing, along with a light snack, breast cancer awareness cupcakes, hot dogs, and bottled water.

Seventeen survivors participated, and $2,046 was raised, according to Green.

Every survivor received a gift.

In addition, the “Pink Heels” ambulance was present to show support for all those who have or have had breast cancer.

The PA Breast Cancer Coalition represents, supports and serves breast cancer survivors and their families in Pennsylvania through educational programming, legislative advocacy and breast cancer research grants.

In addition to the coalition, the Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club supports many community and Lions projects.

Club meetings are generally held the first and last Thursdays of each month at 6 p.m. at the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall.
