Carbon election workers getting a raise

Poll workers who help with elections in Carbon County will see a slight increase in their per diem wage come November.

On Thursday, the board of commissioners approved an action that increases workers wages. Judges of elections will now receive $195; while poll workers will receive $175.

This takes effect at the November General Election.

Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that the raise was deserved for the long hours poll workers complete on election days.

He said when you break the wage down to a per hour, poll workers will now make about $12.50 per hour. Judges will make $13.92 per hour.

“It’s a long day for them,” he said, pointing out that poll workers have to get the precincts ready before polls open at 7 a.m. and have to stay at least a half-hour after polls close at 8 p.m.

This is the second increase poll workers have received in recent years.

In May 2021, poll workers received a slight increase in pay to help in retaining workers.

If you would like to become a poll worker in Carbon County, the commissioners said to reach out to the Elections Bureau at 570-325-4801.

You do not need to reside in the precinct in which you would be serving.

In a related matter, training for poll workers will occur on Oct. 11, 12, and 13 from 5-7 p.m. The training will occur at 44 Susquehanna St., Jim Thorpe.
