The Schuylkill Hope Center for Victims of Domestic Violence will hold “Art in the Park” Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at West Penn Park, 698 Zions Stone Church Rd., New Ringgold.
The free event features art made by those served by the center, along with creativity stations, music and food. It is being held in conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“Our ‘Art is Healing’ program is what really spurred this event,” said Sarah Barket, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit organization. “In our weekly art classes held at our safe house or shelter, one of our staff instructors works with adults and children on art. It is a way to liberate them from past abuse. We use art in the healing process because we believe it is empowering.”
Their work will be displayed alongside pieces submitted by other area artists.
In addition, there will be demonstrations by artists and several creativity stations, where people can try their hand at painting pumpkins, making reusable grocery bags and tie-dyeing. Breathing and grounding classes, along with yoga for kids, will be offered, Barket said.
Vendors will sell candles, beauty products and more, and food trucks will offer a number of items.
Barket said information about the Hope Center and its services will be available. Formerly known as Schuylkill Women in Crisis, it was founded in 1983 and serves about 1,300 county men, women and children each year.
