Pink Light Walk to increase breast cancer awareness

The 17th annual Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club Pink Light Walk will be held Tuesday at the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall.

Check-in will begin at 5 p.m., with the walk to follow at 6 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine.

The walk will begin at the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall, located at 197 N. Sixth St., and proceed to the Lehighton Park amphitheater.

All those participating are asked to wear a pink shirt to increase awareness of breast cancer and show their support for all survivors.

Participants may register at pinklightwalk.com, and are asked to provide their name, email, and whether they are a survivor or a supporter. There is no registration fee.

This year’s speaker will be Dr. Ali Butash physician/surgeon, with St. Luke’s Health System, Carbon County Region.

The event raises funds for the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, according to Alicia Silliman, president of the Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club.

Silliman said the PA Cancer Coalition will provide a mammogram for people who cannot afford one.

“We really encourage the entire community to be involved with this event because of the importance of early cancer detection,” Silliman said. “There’s so much technology for the detection of breast cancer.”

Participants have the option of either walking or driving to the amphitheater. When they return, there will be a huge basket raffle drawing, along with a light snack, breast cancer awareness cupcakes, hot dogs, and bottled water.

Silliman added that every survivor will receive a gift, and everyone who walks will also receive a gift.

The PA Breast Cancer Coalition represents, supports and serves breast cancer survivors and their families in Pennsylvania through educational programming, legislative advocacy and breast cancer research grants.

In addition, the “Pink Heels” ambulance will be present to show support for all those who have or have had breast cancer.

About 200 participants took part in last year’s event.

In addition to the coalition, the Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club supports many community and Lions projects annually.

Club meetings are generally held the first and last Thursdays of each month at 6 p.m. at the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall.
