Library official makes case for funding

A Dimmick Memorial Library official thanked the commissioners for Carbon County’s support over the years and stressed the importance of public support to keep these public assets around.

On Thursday, John McGuire approached the county commissioners to remind them that support is needed. The commissioners are in the process of drafting next year’s budget.

“We need the support,” McGuire said, noting that libraries act as community centers and historical resources for the areas they serve. “We really need your help. ... Libraries are very important.”

He said that Dimmick, in Jim Thorpe, is a hub for the community to do research, gather and learn, with access to millions of documents electronically, as well as thousands of books.

“We appreciate any help because we really need to keep these community centers open,” he said.

The commissioners thanked McGuire for his dedication to the library and said they received his request for funding and it will be considered as the budget is crafted.

Carbon County has several libraries, including Dimmick and Penn-Kidder in Jim Thorpe, Panther Valley in Lansford, Lehighton Memorial in Lehighton, and Palmerton Library in Palmerton.
