Local Roundup: Results from Sept. 22

Lehighton posted wins in both boys soccer and volleyball on Thursday.

Northwestern also picked up a pair of victories, triumphing in field hockey and volleyball.

BOYS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Wyatt Steigerwalt had two goals to lead Tamaqua to a 3-2 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Jathan Krall also tallied for the Blue Raiders, while Cooper Ansbach assisted on all three goals.

Tamaqua keeper Jonathan Ulicny made 11 saves, as the Raiders improved to 4-5 overall, and 4-3 in the league.

The Olympians received a goal from Noah Geiser, while a Raider own goal accounted for the other Thorpe score.

The loss dropped Jim Thorpe to 5-5 overall, and 4-3 in league play.

Pottsville-Lehighton

Lehighton shut out Pottsville 4-0 in a Schuylkill League contest.

AJ Light had a pair of goals for the Indians, scoring one in each half.

The winners received a goal and an assist from Mason Marchessault, while Nick Zeigenfuss also added a goal.

Mason Anthony chipped in with an assist, and Bryce Miller made six saves to record the shutout win.

The victory upped Lehighton’s record to 8-4 overall, and 3-4 in the league.

Weatherly-Nativity

Nativity cruised to a 10-0 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly to remain undefeated.

The winners improved to 9-0 overall, and 7-0 in the league. They have outscored their opponents by a 78-4 margin.

The loss drops the Wreckers to 0-8 overall, and 0-5 in the league.

GIRLS SOCCER

Tamaqua-Minersville

Allyson Young’s goal with 4:26 left in overtime lifted Minersville to a 2-1 victory over visiting Tamaqua.

Sarah Hope put the Blue Raiders on the board first with a goal early in the first half off a Megan Lavine assist.

With 14:25 left in the opening half, the Battlin’ Miners’ Abigail Stine knotted the score with a goal.

Cecelia Ulicny (12 saves) and Veronica Scott (12 saves) both split time in goal for the Blue Raiders. Minersville keeper Olivia Kopinetz finished with 19 saves.

Tamaqua fell to 4-7 overall, while Minersville improved to 7-2.

Pleasant Valley-Whitehall

Whitehall ended Pleasant Valley’s winning streak with a 2-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory.

Mya Manigo made 21 saves for the Bears, who had won four in a row.

Ava Wells and Saige Snyder both scored for the Zephyrs, who held a narrow 25-22 edge in shots on goal.

PV dropped to 7-3-1, while Whitehall upped its mark to 4-5-1.

FIELD HOCKEY

Saucon Valley-Palmerton

Mikayla Pengelly and Alisyn Green both scored goals for Palmerton to give the Blue Bombers a 2-0 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.

The winners, who also received assists from Celeste Hoffman and Kelsey Balliet, outshot their opponents 14-1.

The Bombers’ last four wins have all been shutouts. They moved to 7-4 overall and 6-3 in the league, while the Panthers slipped to 3-5.

Moravian A.-No. Lehigh

Moravian Academy pulled away from Northern Lehigh for a 6-1 Colonial League victory.

Claire Martin and Megan Dadio paced the Lions with two goals apiece.

The Bulldogs’ only score came from Addison Cieri. Nolehi goalie Daisy Richards finished the contest with 27 saves.

Northern Lehigh dropped to 0-9 overall and 0-8 in the CL, while Moravian Academy improved to 7-1.

Pen Argyl-Northwestern

Cora Thomas registered a hat trick to lead Northwestern to a 7-0 Colonial League shutout win over Pen Argyl.

Brinley Rex had a goal and an assist for the Tigers, who led 3-0 at the half and put the game away with four third-period goals.

Northwestern, who outshot the Knights by a 24-9 margin, also received tallies from Claire Costa, Dani Lister and Taylor Langley.

The Tigers improved to 6-3-1 overall, while Pen Argyl fell to 1-10.

GIRLS TENNIS

NDES-Jim Thorpe

Tara McLean and Hailey Trine both won their singles matches in straight sets, and then combined for a victory in doubles, to help Jim Thorpe gain a 4-3 triumph over Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg.

The Olympians also received a straight-set win from No. 3 singles player Ashlynn Miller.

The victory, its sixth in a row, boosted Thorpe’s record to 9-5. The Spartans fell to 4-4.

VOLLEYBALL

Lehighton-Lourdes

Lehighton posted a Schuylkill League sweep of Lourdes, winning 25-20, 25-22, 25-13.

Makenna Snyder had five kills for the Indians, while Lorah Thomas added four kills and five blocks.

The winners also received 24 assists from Mia Snyder. Amanda Burns chipped in with two kills.

Lehighton improved to 4-7.

Panther Valley-Tri-Valley

Emma Dacey had five kills, five aces and two digs to help lead Panther Valley to a 25-10, 25-18, 25-10 Schuylkill League victory over Tri-Valley.

Mikayla Yuricheck contributed five kills, while Caroline Berslin finished with five digs.

The win upped the Panthers record to 8-2 overall, and 6-1 in the league. Tri-Valley dropped to 3-5.

PV lost the JV match, 2-11.

Northwestern-Catasauqua

Northwestern swept past Catasauqua 25-13, 25-20, 25-13 in a Colonial League contest.

The victory was the sixth in a row for the Tigers, who improved to 7-2 overall.

The Roughies, who received 13 digs and two kills from Cora Soltis, dropped to 3-6.

Marian-Nativity

Nativity remained undefeated in Schuylkill League play, earning a 25-18, 25-22, 17-25, 25-20 victory over Marian.

Megan Paisley had 11 kills and 20 digs for the Fillies, while Abbey Kluck contributed nine kills and 15 digs. Marian also received 28 assists and seven digs from Julia Meiss, with Jenna Goff adding five kills and nine digs.

The Fillies, who saw their six-game winning streak snapped, fell to 8-4 overall and 5-2 in the league. Nativity is now 9-2 and 7-0.

Notre Dame GP-Palmerton

Notre Dame of Green Pond cruised to a 25-2, 25-10, 25-17 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Emily Christopher paced the Blue Bombers with two kills and two blocks, while Alexis Hess finished with two blocks.

Palmerton dropped to 2-7 overall, and 1-4 in the CL. Notre Dame upped its mark to 6-1.

Weatherly-Minersville

Minersville posted a 25-13, 25-16, 25-18 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

Abby Paisley finished with seven assists, six service points and two aces for the Wreckers, while Becca Schell added three digs, three blocks, two service points and two kills.

Weatherly’s Kelly Michaels contributed eight digs and five kills, with Christal Kislan collecting four digs, three service points and three kills.

The Wreckers are now 2-9 overall, and 1-6 in the league.

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Tamaqua dropped a 25-7, 25-13, 25-19 Schuylkill League decision to Pottsville.

Lacey Beers had 10 digs for the Blue Raiders, while Eileen Lusch recorded an ace and five digs. Sarah Coccio chipped in with three digs and a block.

Tamaqua fell to 1-12 overall, and 0-7 in the league.

Pottsville also won the JV match, 2-0.
