Schuylkill League championship

Lehighton’s Trey Spring fired a round of 78 at the difficult Schuylkill Country Club Course to capture the Schuylkill League individual championship.

Spring, whose round included an eagle on the par-5 14th hole, was the only player to break 80 on the par-72 course.

“I had in my head before the round that if I could shoot somewhere in the 70s I had a chance to win it,” said Spring. “I wanted to stay consistent and just play my game.

“I think what I was most pleased with was my mental game. It’s a tough course and you’re going to hit make some mistakes, but when I hit a bad shot or had a bad hole, I was able to put it behind me and focus on the next shot and next hole.”

Jeff Markosy of team champion North Schuylkill was second with a round of 82. Tamaqua’s Peter McGinley finished in a three-way tie for third with an 83.

Sprin is the second straight Lehighton golfer to win the individual championship, following on the heels on Aaron Miller a year ago.

“It’s amazing to follow up Aaron’s title with one of my own,” said Spring. “I was fifth at league’s a year ago and I tried to use that as a little motivation to improve on that this year. I’m really happy that I was able to do that.”

While Spring entered the tournament knowing he had a chance to contend, he didn’t want to know how he was doing during his round.

“There was a website that had the live scoring, but I didn’t even look at my phone to check it out,” said Spring. “I just wanted to concentrate on my round and not worry about what everyone else was doing.

“With five or six holes left I could tell by what my playing partners were saying that I was doing well, but I never looked myself.”

Spring’s championship wasn’t the only local highlight of th day as Jim Thorpe’s Mark Domski enjoyed a special moment when he recorded a hole-in-one on the fourth hole.

North Schuylkill’s own Brooke Powis won the girls’ individual championship with a 95. Maddie Von Frisch of Weatherly (101) and Katie Miller of Tamaqua (106) finished in third and fourth place respectively in the six-person girls field.
