Playground upgrades proposed in Weissport

Dr. Keith “Jake” Boyer and Sandy Putkowski of the Jacob’s Weissport Historical Society attended the monthly Weissport council meeting to get support for upgrading the borough playground.

Boyer plans to apply for a grant from Horsehead Community Development Fund for $25,000 to be used for repairs and upgrades to the playground.

“They (Horsehead) have distributed in excess of $3 million to help finance hospitals, libraries, recreational projects, and other organizations,” Boyer said. “This caught my eye, and I got a call from my sister (Sandy Putkowski), and asked if I wanted to do anything through the (Jacob’s) church and the (Weissport) Historical Society. You never know if you don’t go out and give it a try.”

“I’d like to brainstorm a little bit and get things going. I have a list of things I’d like to see done at the Weissport playground.”

Some of the suggested projects include basketball courts, sealing the playing court, paint the fence, refurbish the benches, install concrete walkways, upgrade and paint the playground equipment, purchase trash containers, and install a tennis court.

Other projects around the borough include the purchase of a permanent marker for the Benjamin Franklin statue and concrete area around the Betty Mullen statue, both in the borough park, and paint more murals on the bridge piers with an education theme of people from Weissport.

Labor for the projects would be volunteers with the historical society.

The project would be overseen by the historical society, Boyer, Putkowski and Ruth Bush.

The council is not being asked for funds, just for the support of the grant and the projects.

“The grant is due Thursday,” Boyer said. “I’ve got it all put together, and I gave Arlie (council President Arland Moyer) a copy of it. We’ll submit it, because you never know what will happen.”

Weissport Council members passed a motion offering their support for the project.
