JT tennis falls to Blue Mtn.

ORWIGSBURG – It’s always been a battle between Jim Thorpe and Blue Mountain on the tennis court.

At times, the two teams have gone point-for-point and serve-for-serve against each other.

On Monday afternoon, however, the Eagles had too much firepower for the Olympians in posting a 6-1 victory.

“We always enjoy playing each other,” veteran Blue Mountain coach Oscar Ney said. “We never take anything for granted.

“It’s great to play these guys. It’s always fun to play these guys.”

Ney said his top player - Aspen Weizer - has been at the top of her game this season, having suffered only one loss. And on Monday, she continued her stellar play by defeating Thorpe’s Tara McLean in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

“They’re very good,” said Olympian mentor Sam Lux, who is in his second season guiding the squad. “The scores don’t really indicate how close some of our matches were with them.

“You just never really know going in (to a match) what to expect.”

Blue Mountain’s No. 2 Mackenzie Romig also turned the tables on Hailey Trine, claiming a 6-0, 6-0 win, but at No. 3 Jim Thorpe’s Ashlyn Miller gave her opponent a very competitive match.

Facing the Eagles’ Leah Walasavage, Miller hung tough in the opening set before falling by a 6-4 score. The second set was also competitive before Walasavage came away with a 6-3 decision and the straight-set victory.

At No. 4 and No. 5 singles, JT’s Chloe Tantala and Keira Reese also dropped straight-set decisions, although Reese put up a fight in her match against Carly Seitzinger.

Reese took Seitzinger to a 10th game in the opening set, before falling by a 6-4 score. Seitzinger managed to hold off Reese in the second set, posting a 6-3 win.

Thorpe’s bright spot on the day came at No. 1 doubles where its tandem of McLean and Trine produced the team’s lone point. The two pulled off an 8-1 pro-set victory to prevent Blue Mountain from earning a shutout.

The Eagles closed things out at No. 2 doubles with another win to set the final score.

FLYING HIGH … Blue Mountain is now 6-2 on the season, having suffered only close losses to Wyomissing and Berks Catholic. The Eagles currently sit in second place in the District 11 Class 2A rankings.

LOOKING UP ... Thorpe dropped to 3-5 at the midway point of its schedule, and is in eighth place in the district rankings. The Olympians have wins over Palisades, Tamaqua and Pottsville this season. Their losses are against Hamburg, MMI, Central Catholic, Bangor and now Blue Mountain. Lux said his team has faced some tougher competition early, and hopes to get on a winning roll during the second half of the season.
