Thorpe cruises past Salisbury

Maybe it was just the time and place it had to happen. Maybe some howling at the harvest moon helped.

The bottom line was that Jim Thorpe dominated the line of scrimmage with 313 yards of offense in a 48-12 rout of the Salisbury Falcons on Friday night.

After two early season losses, the Olympians left little doubt which team would get its first win of the year. Riding the legs of eight ball carriers and the hands of five different receivers, the Olympians jumped to 28-0 halftime lead.

Sal Capria, who gained 132 yards rushing, and David Fiorito, who had 116 all-purpose yards, led the way on four scoring drives. A five minute opening drive of the game was finished by Fiorito when he took a jet sweep hand off around right end for a 13 yard touchdown run.

The Falcons opening drive was snuffed out at their 20 when the Jim Thorpe defense sacked quarterback Nicholas Beck for a 10 yard loss.

After a punt return of 16 yards by Justin Yescavage, Capria ended a drive himself by running for 42 yards on two plays and a 14-0 Jim Thorpe lead.

“Sal and David have been outstanding for us,” said Jim Thorpe coach Mark Rosenberger. “They were a great one-two punch tonight.”

The Olympians would have scored on their third drive if not for a fumble in the Salisbury end zone resulting in a touchback.

Jim Thorpe’s defense kept the Falcons’ offense bottled up on their side of the fifty, holding them to just two first downs in the first half with one coming on a penalty.

Thorpe took the opening kickoff of the second half and in fewer than two minutes, Fiorito scored again. The shifty senior caught three passes from Brett Balliet to get to the Falcon two yard line where he busted off the right side to give the Olympians a five touchdown lead. Benjamin Goldberg extended the lead to 42 points with a two yard burst up the middle.

The Falcons scored twice in the fourth quarter. Beck scored from two yards out after a 65 yard hookup in the air with Josh Brooks. Sandwiched between that touchdown and the last play of the game, a 75 yard kickoff return by Salisbury’s Jason St. Leger, was a 12-yard touchdown around right end by Jim Thorpe’s Conner Miller.

“We took advantage of what they gave us and our offensive line opened some big holes,” Rosenberger said. “We had a great week of practice and this win was a big confidence builder going forward.”

MIXING IT UP ... Rosenberger was pleased with how well his offense did with both the running and the passing game, a diversified attack that should benefit them as they move into a tougher part of their schedule.

UP NEXT ... Thorpe travels to Palmerton next Friday night to take on the Bombers, who lost their first game of the season, 47-40, to Palisades last night.
