Lower Towamensing Township prepares for winter weather

With winter weather just around the corner, Lower Towamensing Township supervisors took steps Tuesday night to improve their fleet.

The supervisors approved spending $5,000 to repair the 1995 GMC Topkick truck. Brent Green, the chairman of the supervisors, said the truck needs a replacement of the axle and hub system.

“This will allow us to have a fully operational fleet for the snow season,” he said.

They also approved submitting an application for a Local Shares Account grant to help cover the cost of a single axle dump truck. The supervisors would like to add it to the fleet.

Plans to purchase a truck uplift kit for the GMC 3500 chassis had to be tabled, because they didn’t have any quotes for the cost, Green said.

As for getting the roads ready, they approved the line stripping of 21 miles of township roads at a cost of $21,900.

“All of the main roads, but not those in developments,” Green said.

In all, the double yellow line will be repainted on about 20 roads and the white lines will be repainted on Covered Bridge Road.

The supervisors would also like to hire a third full-time member of the road crew. Anyone interested in working for the township should contact the municipal office at 610-826-2522 or email the office at lowertow@ptd.net. More information about the job is also available in a listing on Indeed.com.

In other business, the supervisors handled a couple lot consolidations. One was for a business and the other for a resident.

Green said they granted conditional approval to the consolidation of four lots into one lot on Little Gap Road. The owner of the Covered Bridge Inn wants the consolidation because he wants to reconfigure the parking lot to make it safer for patrons. He also needs to rework the storm water management and sewage systems, so combining the lots into one makes this easier to accomplish.

The other lot consolidation was that of a residential property owned by Larry Eckhart. He wants to combine two lots into one.

Green said the supervisors are planning to have an electronic recycling event later this year. A date has not been set, but when it is, it will be some time during the week.

“We thought it was successful, so we decided to offer it again,” he said.

As in the past, the electronic recycling event will be open to only residents of Lower Towamensing Township.
