Pleasant Valley runs over Allen

Pleasant Valley coach, Blaec Saeger has no secrets about his game plan against pretty much every team the Bears play.

“We’re going to run the ball and control the clock,” he said.

Running their triple option to near perfection, the Bears (2-0) dominated on the field of play and controlled the clock in a 42-13 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over the William Allen.

It didn’t take for the Bears to show their dominance.

Following an early Allen punt, Pleasant Valley took over on the Canaries 48-yard line and finished off a seven-play drive with a six-yard touchdown burst by Fela Olaniyan for an early 7-0 lead.

Allen then went 12 plays and 68 yards until the drive stalled and the Canaries settled for a 37-yard field goal by Alejandro Cordova. The first quarter ended with the Bears holding a slim 7-3 advantage.

At the start of the second, Saeger’s philosophy was executed exactly as planned. Attacking the defense where it was most vulnerable, the Bears blasted between the tackles with Olaniyan, who would finish the night with 133 yards on the ground. He carried eight times on a 14-play drive that ended with a one-yard dive for a 14-3 lead.

The Allen offense began another long drive sparked by a 42 pass from quarterback Austin Snyder to Lawson Vasquez, who would catch five balls for 113 yards in the game. The drive ended at the Pleasant Valley eight-yard line when a bad snap from center pushed the line of scrimmage back to the 25-yard line. On a fourth-and-goal, the Bears’ Leadell Burpo intercepted a pass at the one to end the threat.

With 2:06 left in the half, the Bears would strike again. This time PV went on a 99-yard drive that culminated in 33-yard TD run by Jarod Moore for a 21-3 lead at the break.

“I can’t say enough about Olaniyan and Moore,” said Saeger. “They’re really tough kids and honor students and our quarterback, (Val) Byers- Robinson is a perfect third threat for the offense we run.’

The Bears wasted no time at the start of the second half to make sure there would be no comeback by the Canaries. A 62-yard drive featuring cutback runs from Byers-Robinson, including his 26-yard keeper to paydirt, put the Bears up 28-3.

Allen fumbled away its next possession at its own 21, setting up Moore’s 3-yard run off right tackle for a commanding 35-3 lead with 8:38 to go in the third.

Another turnover gave the ball back to the Bears at their own 49. Blake Watkins ran a pitch left for 15 yards and Olaniyan shot up the middle for a first down at the Allen 22. With a third-and-11 at the 21, Byers-Robinson faked a hand-off and raced to the nine from where Moore scored on a pitch a play later.

In a passionate post-game speech to his team, Saeger looked past the win and sent his team’s focus on next week’s match up against East Stroudsburg South - a game that can keep the Bears on the fast track to what could be turning into an outstanding season.

“The Purple are coming here next week,” Saeger said to his players, “and we will be ready for them.”

GROUNDHOGS

... The Bears have now scored 104 points in their first two games with nary a passing yard. In fact, they threw exactly one pass against Allen and that fell incomplete.

PREACHING TO THE CHOIR ... Both teams used the “choir huddle” where the quarterback faces his skilled players in front with the lineman standing in back. It’s a formation made famous by the Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League back in the 1960s.
