Flood risk seminar to be held

Monroe County, the Federal Emergency Management Agency Region 3, and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, will host a virtual event, “Living with Water: the Future of Flood Insurance” dedicated to understanding flood risk and flood insurance on Friday.

The morning session will bring focus on flood mitigation for businesses in the East Stroudsburg area of Pennsylvania.

The virtual roundtable will connect key stakeholders from all types of businesses and will include a panel discussion about flood risk and flood insurance with government officials, Realtors, insurance agents, lenders and emergency managers.

Following the moderated panel, the workshop will feature breakout sessions on insurance affordability, communication challenges, perceptions of risk, and successful local-level floodplain management. The event is from 9 a.m. to noon. Businesses can sign up online at Eventbrite.

The afternoon event is focused on residents in the East Stroudsburg area and will include similar discussion with opportunity for small group discussion and Q&A about flood risk, flood mitigation and flood insurance. The events, co-organized by Monroe County Emergency Management Agency, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and FEMA will provide an in-depth look at how flooding and insurance can impact communities.

“Flooding is the most common and costly hazard in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and flood insurance provides critical protection for property owners during a flood,” said Maryellen Keegan, Monroe County Office of Emergency Management Director.

Roundtable activities will kick off in the morning with presentations on flood risk and insurance from federal, state and local partners, and will be followed by a moderated panel discussion with the public and private sector experts.
