Fundraiser set for Palmerton family displaced by fire

A fundraiser for a Palmerton family who lost everything in a fire early Tuesday morning has been set.

The Basket Raffle and Bake Sale to benefit the Zelinsky Family will be held from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 21 at Don Laine Campground, 790 57 Drive, Palmerton.

Marcy and Jay Zelinsky were on vacation when a fire broke out after 5:30 a.m. at a twin duplex at 131 Columbia Ave. The Zelinsky’s lived at 133 Columbia.

Upon word of the fire, Tammy Recker and Stacy Burnett set out to organize the fundraiser for the Zelinsky family.

“Reached out through Facebook to everybody, and Tammy jumped on it,” Burnett said. “I know what insurances are like.”

Burnett, manager of Don Laine Campground, said it’s simply about friends helping friends.

“It’s just to help them out,” she said. “It’s horrible losing everything.”

Burnett said she’s known Marcy since grade school.

“We’re very close; she was in my wedding,” she said. “Marcy’s one to help jump in and help anybody or anything.”

Family members and friends posted their appreciation to everyone who has supported the Zelinskys.

That includes Bruce Connell, Marcy’s father.

“The incredible support for my daughter and her family is indeed heartwarming,” Connell said. “Family members, friends, acquaintances and strangers have really come forward. There are a lot of wonderful people in this community.”

Robin Wisocky, 61, died in the fire. She was found on the second floor of 131 Columbia.

Carbon County Coroner Bob Miller said Wisocky’s cause of death is carbon monoxide toxicity, and ruled it an accidental death.

Palmerton Fire Chief Jason Behler said that state police fire marshals arrived on scene to conduct an investigation.
