Calvary Lewistown

Guest speaker the Rev. Keith McCarthy will present the message at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle. Sunday school is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. There is no evening service this week. Prayer meeting on Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. Former Pastor, Rev. Brian Reading will present the message at the 10:25 a.m. service on Aug. 21. Lewistown Valley camp meeting starting Aug. 26 through Sept. 5.

Summer Celebration

Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network and the Tamaqua Ministerial Association are hosting a community “Summer Celebration” on Sunday beginning at 7 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ on Lafayette Street, Tamaqua.

Once again, the evening of music, message and fellowship features the Blue Mountain Community Church Praise Band led by Pastor Jennifer Eckert.

Members of the Tamaqua Ministerial Association will deliver short messages between praise sets. Messages will be delivered by Father Robert Finlan (St. John XXIII Parish), Pastor Rick Clemson (American Primitive Methodist) and Pastor Cundy White (Zion Lutheran). Other Tamaqua pastors will also participate in the service.

As in the past, the evening closes with a fellowship time.

A freewill offering will be taken. All are welcome.

TAFFN is an organization of lay leaders from Tamaqua area churches and other organizations doing God’s work in the community. TAFFN is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and operates under the umbrella of the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership.

Tamaqua Seniors

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met on Aug. 4 with 29 members in attendance. President Mary Bittle opened the meeting with the reading “God Walks With Us.”

The group meets every Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Coaldale Complex. Anyone 55 and older is invited to attend.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday at Zion Church Lewistown Valley. Sunday school is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

Rush-Ryan-Delano Seniors

The Rush-Ryan-Delano Senior Citizens met on July 26 with 33 members in attendance. Bill Morrison, Mary Ann Laughlin and Maryann Fisher were added to the sick list.

A bus trip to Penn’s Peak was discussed and a trip to Shady Maple was put on hold.

The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at Christ Church, Barnesville, at 1 p.m. Anyone 55 and older is invited to attend.

Garden Club

The following members of the Lewistown Valley Garden Club were recent winners for their entries in the Schuylkill County Fair:

In the floral category: Artistic Floral Arrangement, “Chick Magnet,” featuring a chicken or chicken theme, first place, Pat Wishousky; second, Judy Kellner; Honorable mention, Evelyn Adams. “Flowers by Lanternlight,” featuring a lantern and white flowers, best of show and first place, Judy Kellner; second, Evelyn Adams, third, Pat Wishousky; honorable mention, Mary Bridygham. “My Hero,” fresh flowers with green featuring First Responder or Fire/Police theme, second place, Evelyn Adams; Fair Theme ”working together to keep the tradition alive,” four vases with fresh flowers, each vase and accessories represent an item from the fair, best of show and first place, Judy Kellner; third place, Mary Bridygham. Dry arrangement using dried flowers, dried oranges and cinnamon sticks, first place, Judy Kellner. In the specimen category, first place for garden zinnia, Pat Wishousky; honorable mention, Pat Wishousky.

In the Needlecraft category: Applique Quilt, first place, Mary Bridygham; Scarf, third place, Mary Bridygham; Baby Quilt, first place, Mary Bridygham; Afghan, first place, Mary Bridygham.

The next meeting will be held Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. The program will be presented by Tom Reed on composting. Arrangement to be judged that night will be “Jack in the Beanstalk” incorporating vegetables; Specimen, any blooming flower. As always, new members are welcome.

Peach social

Zion Lutheran’s Culinary Crew is hosting a peach social on Aug. 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. or sellout. The menu includes fresh peaches, cake, ice cream and additional homemade food items.

Casino bus trip

St. John Parish XXIII Parish of Tamaqua is running a bus trip to Wind Creek Casino, Bethlehem, on Sept. 17. Cost of trip includes round trip transportation and a casino rebate (must be 21 years of age and have a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license or ID card to receive rebate).
