Tamaqua Public Library holds book sale fundraiser
While you’re cruising the yard sales in Tamaqua on Aug. 6, give yourself a break and step into the air-conditioned comfort of the Tamaqua Public Library to relax, sip coffee, and browse the hundreds of books on sale at bargain basement prices.
The sale is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 30 S. Railroad St., and is a favorite fundraiser for readers of all ages.
This annual fundraiser is crucial to the library, allowing it to continue to offer the latest books and programs for children, teens and adults.
In addition to a wide array of mystery, history, romance and self-improvement books, this year’s book sale features a rare chance to buy two very special books signed by the authors for supporters who wish to make a larger donation but walk away with a prize purchase.
“A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles unfolds over 32 years as it describes the life of a Russian aristocrat placed under house arrest in a luxurious hotel. The punishment, imposed by communists in 1922 upon Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, may sound like a lifetime vacation.
But if he ever leaves, he will be executed.
Towles, a former investment professional, has written two other novels, “Rules of Civility” and “The Lincoln Highway”
His three books have sold more than 6 million copies.
“Godmersham Park” by Gill Hornby, is a must-read for anyone who loves Jane Austen.
This signed exclusive edition with sprayed edges and exclusive end papers won’t even be available for commercial sale in the United States until November.
Hornby is the acclaimed author of “Miss Austen.”
“Godmersham Park” is based on the real life of Anne Sharp.
As a governess for 12-year-old Fanny Austen, the novice governess endures under the pressure of the subtle and myriad rules of working for the family, in constant fear of being fired.
Her life changes immeasurably when Edward Austen’s family moves in; she developed a close friendship with Jane.
But another life change is in store when Jane’s brother, Henry, finds himself attracted to Sharp.
Is her home with the Austens at risk?
