Pipe work begins at Lansford pool

Leaks forced the Lansford pool to close seven years ago.

A project got underway this week to fix them, in hopes of reopening sometime in the future.

“We’re thrilled. It’s seven years coming,” said Gwyn Collevechio, Lansford Council member and president of Friends of Lansford Recreation.

On Sunday, contractors started a project to replace the pipes that supply the pool. Over the next week they will dig up the old pool deck.

Installing new pipes is expected to take several weeks. The old pipes, which are believed to have been the source of the leak, run underneath the pool.

The pool was last renovated in 1985 and dates to 1944.

The borough elected to remove and replace the pool deck so they could fix the leaks without digging up the pool itself.

The project is the first step in renovating the pool. If it is successful, the borough will look at replacing the pool deck - possibly in 2023.

After seven years, borough officials said it is time to do something with the pool.

“Everybody wants to see this pool open,” said Bruce Markovich, Lansford Borough Council president.

The Friends of Lansford Recreation contracted with Joseph Hutta Plumbing and Heating for the Project. The borough is providing supplies, and a dump truck to help with the removal.

“This is a good cooperative effort,” Markovich said.

The Friends of the Lansford Pool also recently renovated the snack bar in anticipation of the pool reopening.

The friends regularly hold fundraisers to raise money for the pool. This year for the first time they sponsored a summer concert series. Upcoming concerts include the Pennsylvania Villagers, Aug. 12 from 6-8 p.m.; and Sammy Alonge & Carol Tempest, Sept. 2 from 6-8 p.m.

On Aug. 27, Carbon County Plantfest will help raise money for the pool. The event takes place 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Kennedy Park.
