Woman leads police on two-county chase

A Summit Hill woman led police on a two-county high-speed chase that ended when she crashed her vehicle into a West Penn Township police car in Jim Thorpe.

Denise M. Lloyd, 56, was arraigned on multiple charges and sent to prison following the June 24 incident.

According to Tamaqua police, officers were called to the parking lot of Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer’s court in Tamaqua to check on Lloyd’s welfare.

A court employee said Lloyd was acting in a strange manner when she was in the office earlier for a traffic offense. The employee told police that she did not believe Lloyd was capable of driving.

Lloyd was seated in her vehicle and appeared disheveled and nervous when officers spoke to her.

She claimed she was “fine” but when asked twice to exit her vehicle, police said she refused and became combative. She became more agitated and attempted to drive away, police said.

Officers told her to stop or a stun gun would be used on her, but she continued driving.

Officers deployed the stun gun onto her left arm but she drove away.

Officers attempted to stop her but she drove onto Cedar Street and cut through the Boyer’s Market parking lot, where she almost struck vehicles and pedestrians, police said. She sped onto Route 309 and turned onto Owl Creek Road.

Police said she was driving recklessly, passing vehicles and almost caused several drivers to crash as she headed toward the Carbon County line.

Tamaqua officers notified the Schuylkill County Communications Center that they were stopping the pursuit for safety reasons and because they had Lloyd’s license and registration.

Carbon units were able to stop Lloyd at the intersection of White Bear Drive and Route 902 but she quickly drove off the road and continued onto Lentz Trail.

Police said her vehicle reached speeds of 85 mph and she did not stop at stop signs as she traveled onto Center Avenue in Jim Thorpe.

She eventually ran into the rear of a parked West Penn unit and was taken into custody.

Police said Lloyd refused to have her blood drawn. Lehighton EMS cleared Lloyd of any injuries.

In addition to Tamaqua and West Penn, Summit Hill, Nesquehoning and Jim Thorpe police assisted with the incident.

No one was injured.

She was arraigned before Bayer on two counts of aggravated assault; and one count each of fleeing or attempting to elude police; criminal mischief for damaging property; resisting arrest; driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance; driving on roadways laned for traffic; failure to stop at stop signs; speeding; careless driving and reckless driving.

She was committed to Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $25,000 cash bail.
