Palmerton group donates to veterans organization, animal rescue society

A local veterans organization, along with an animal rescue society, were the recipients of donations courtesy of a Palmerton organization.

Members of Crusaders for a Cause on Thursday presented two separate donations of $500 raised from its 16th annual spring carnival held in May in the borough park.

Proceeds from the carnival benefit local charities, which in this case were the Palmerton United Veterans Organization, and the Blue Mountain Animal Rescue Society.

George Duell, member, Palmerton American Legion Post 269, said the group is grateful to Crusaders for a Cause for its generous donation.

Duell said “this is just another example of the community supporting the veterans,” and added it’s a show of “strong community support.”

Joe Uhnak, first vice commander, Palmerton American Legion Post 269, said the donation will be used to eventually replace the 20-by-30-foot flag that is located at the entrance to the borough.

Uhnak said the flag is “getting worn.”

“We have to have a flag ready for it,” Uhnak said. “It not only takes a lot of money to buy it; (but) it also takes time to get it.”

Christina Obrecht, president, Crusaders for a Cause, said the group is more than deserving.

“No good deed goes unnoticed,” Obrecht said. “We appreciate all the work the veterans do.”

Donna Becker-Crum, president, Blue Mountain Animal Rescue Society, said the funds will go toward its Wheelchairs for Dogs program and animal food pantry.

“The demand is high, the funds are low,” Crum said.

“We appreciate what they (Crusaders for a Cause) do and help us.”

Obrecht said Crusaders were happy to assist the organization.

“We appreciate their work,” she said. “They can definitely use the extra funding, and we appreciate all their support.”
