Weatherly Area School Board votes for no tax increase

The Weatherly Area School Board voted against raising taxes for their proposed 2022-23 budget of $15,754,839. At a special meeting June 15, a motion to approve a 1.1-mill tax increase, plus taking $185,699 from the remaining fund balance, was voted down 5-3.

Opposed were board President April Walters, Treasurer Thomas Connors, Chrissie Houser, Ken Jacoby III and Christy Minor. Members Nancy Mulvaney, Barbara Sipler and Matt Von Frisch voted in favor. Member William Knepper was absent.

Connors then made a motion to approve the budget with no tax increase, with $330,439 taken from the district’s fund balance to cover the shortfall. That vote was approved unanimously.

In other business, the board approved the ’22 Homestead/Farmstead Exclusion resolution.

There was a split vote on approving the coaches list for the coming school year, with Walters, Connors and Houser voting no, while Jacoby, Minor, Mulvaney, Sipler and Von Frisch voting yes. Those voting against objected to some big increases given to some of the coaches.

In other business, the board approved use of school facilities by the Weatherly varsity cheerleaders for a June 18 fundraiser; and by the music department for an instrument rental information night on Sept. 8.

In public comments, a resident asked if the new homes built these past months in Kidder Township are on the tax rolls. There was also a brief discussion about the tax effect of a new warehouse on Route 940 in Kidder that hopes to start construction later this year. The taxes from the second warehouse project, and from new homes, will make a sizable dent in the deficit.
