Lehighton Band to present first concert Thursday

The Lehighton Band will present its first concert under the stars on Thursday.

It will take place at 8 p.m. in the Lehighton Park amphitheater, and will be the first of three concerts in the park.

Under the direction of Bradly R. Cressley, the band will start the concert with the playing of the national anthem along with a special fanfare arranged by Moffitt. The band will then play John Philip Sousa’s “Hands Across the Sea” march.

Serving as the overture for the concert is a beautiful piece of concert music by James Sweringen titled “Jubilance.” The piece contains contrasting exciting parts with ballad-like sections.

One of the most well-known composers of music for television and movies is Henry Mancini. The band’s next number features some of his most famous works including “The Pink Panther theme,” “Baby Elephant Walk,” “Dreamsvillen” and the theme from “Peter Gunn.”

“Montage” is a piece of concert music for band written by John Tatgenhorst and will certainly have the audience’s toes tapping. Following that is a rousing rendition of the church hymn “Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken.”

The band will completely switch gears and play “Come Go With Me,” a pop tune made famous by the Del-Vikings. This fun tune leads into the soloist for the night’s concert. The first and second seat trumpet players will perform the “Flower Duet” arranged by Jerry Brubaker.

A rousing polka called the “Tritsch Tratsch” (Chit Chat) Polka is next and the band hopes to see dancing in the aisles as they play.

The band will slow things down next with “Rhapsody on the Minstrel Boy” arranged by Robert Farnon.

Pop and rock legends The Mamas and Papas will be next featuring “Monday, Monday,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me” and “California Dreamin’.”

“Blue Ridge Saga” is another piece of band music by Sweringen which was written as a tribute to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

The band will complete the concert with a Karl King march “Aces of the Air.”

The concert is free to the public, but a free will offering will be accepted.

In the event of rain, the concert will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Third and Mahoning streets, Lehighton. The congregation has offered their sanctuary to be used in the event of rain for all summer concerts.

The Super Soft ice cream truck is expected to be on site.
