Palmerton selects 2022 Miss Poppy, Mascot

The Palmerton United Veterans Organization Memorial Day activities will get underway with a parade at 10 a.m. Monday.

Macie Borger, 7, of Girl Scout Brownie Troop 348, has been named Miss Poppy 2022, and Logan Smale, 6, of Lion Cub Pack 209, has been named Palmerton American Legion Mascot.

The children will each carry a wreath during the parade; one of which will be placed at the memorial in the borough park, and the other at the memorial near the borough hall on Delaware Avenue.

Macie said she was very happy when she got the call to be Miss Poppy, and is excited to be able to walk along with other girls and boys from Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops to participate in this very important event held in her hometown.

Logan said that he was very happy to be picked as the Legion Mascot.

“I like to support the veterans because they help our country and help to keep us safe,” Logan said. “I am thankful for the veterans who saved us by giving their own life.”

Macie and Logan, along with various other Scouts, will be selling poppies after the parade and during the ceremonies following.

Money from the proceeds of the sale will go to the Palmerton American Legion and the Palmerton Veterans of Foreign Wars to be used for scholarships and the upkeep of the Veterans Memorial.

Macie is the daughter of Gary and Jen Borger of Palmerton, while Logan is the son of Joshua and Jodi Smale of Palmerton.

As for the parade, it will form in front of Shea’s Hardware and Delaware Avenue, where it will march down Delaware Avenue, with stops along the route to place a wreath at the Veterans Memorial, the Revolutionary Soldier at the police station, and at borough hall to place a wreath at the monument.

The parade will proceed to Fifth Street, to Franklin Avenue to Palmerton Borough Park, where services are held at 11 a.m. In case of rain, services will be held in the S.S. Palmer gymnasium.

Palmerton Police Chief Timothy Kromer, an Iraq War veteran, will be the featured speaker.

Joe Uhnak, vice commander of the Palmerton United Veterans Organization, said that Quilts of Valor will be distributed after the services are completed.

The parade committee would like to give a special thank you to Sharon Bowman of Palmerton for her continued donation of the wreaths that are placed at the three monuments.
