Ascension Mass

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, will have an Ascension Vigil Mass at 5 p.m. today and Masses Thursday, at 12:10 and 7 p.m. There is no 8 a.m. Mass Thursday.

After the Mass today, a farewell reception will be held for Margaret LaFiura for all she has done for the church.

Athletic awards

The Pleasant Valley High School will recognize its athletes tonight, beginning at 6 p.m.

Free dinner

Thursday, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., West End Missions is again offering a free takeout dinner at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church.

The church is located at Route 209 and Weir Lake Road.

PTO election

The Pleasant Valley Intermediate School’s PTO will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday in the multipurpose room to elect its officers.

Supplied info error

The date for the West End Democrats hosting an open forum at the West End Firehouse, Route 715, Brodheadsville, in the upper level banquet room was submitted incorrectly to this office.

The event is happening from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, which is May 26, not May 27.

It is open to the public and is being held to discuss the recent development re: the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision. Specifically, should the Court remand this matter back to the states, how would Pennsylvania’s elected officials respond as to privacy rights, women’s health rights, etc., and, what other legally protected rights could be impacted.

The panel will consist of various Democratic candidates and a Q and A between the attendees and the panel will be the general format. Party and nonparty members alike are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Poppy sales

The American Legion Post 927 members, Gilbert, continue their poppy sales from 1 to 5 p.m. today at ShopRite, and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at ESSA Bank.

Free flicks set

St. Peter’s United Methodist Church is offering Fourth Friday free family flicks at the church over the summer beginning in May.

The films will be shown outdoors, so attendees are asked bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, snacks, and drinks and even bug spray.

Show times will vary with the sunset. Rain date will be the following Friday.

This Friday the show is to be “Babe,” rated G, which runs 1 hour 32 minutes.

On June 24, “The Cowboys” is on tap, rated PG, and running 128 minutes.

Effort UMC pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday.

Pentecost services

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost both Saturday and Sunday by reading the Universal Prayers in various languages represented in the parish community.

Anyone who speaks another language and would be willing to translate and read a petition during Mass, is asked to email trivett@qopchurch.org.

Healing service

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, will hold a healing service with patriotic songs this Sunday at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m.

The church is also collecting items for PVEN this month.

Guest speaker

St. Peter’s UMC, Saylorsburg, will host missionary Penny Kellow at its 10 a.m. worship service this Sunday.

The church continues to hold in-person worship.

Anyone unable to join them in person in the sanctuary may participate via Facebook Live using www.Facebook.com/petersumc.saylorsburg.

Wednesday evening Bible studies will continue at 7 p.m., following the theme of the previous Sunday’s sermon.

Veterans ceremony

The Polk Township Veterans Memorial Commission will be honoring local veterans at an unveiling ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Veterans Memorial, 135 Trach Road, Kresgeville.

The Polk Veterans Commission has been gathering names of local veterans for the new plaque since 2019. The 2022 Unveiling Ceremony will highlight the installation of the new plaque and includes the names of hundreds Polk Township veterans who served from WWII to present day.

The Veterans Memorial was built and dedicated in 1996 on land donated by the Strausberger family who lost their son, Whitey B., in the Vietnam War.

The 2022 Unveiling Ceremony program will last about one hour and will be followed by a short reception.

Attendees are reminded to bring lawn chairs as there is no seating available, arrive 15 minutes early, and in the event of inclement weather, the event will be inside Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran church.

Memorial Day event

American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, is holding a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday. It is open to the community.

The invocation will be given by Auxiliary Chaplain Joyce Castillo. It will be followed by Resolution 288 and POW/MIA Chair.

Post Commander Danny Insalata will offer the welcome.

Speakers include Pennsylvania state Rep. Jack Rader, state Rep. Rosemary Brown, state Sen. Mario Scavello, Post Vice Commander Patrick Seiler, and Pennsylvania Veterans Affairs Rep. Lisa Kane.

A roll call and tolling of the bell will follow the speakers.

The closing will be by Insalata with the benediction by Auxiliary President Eileen McGuire.

The closing bell will sound and participants will move outside for the placing of the wreath and the raising of the flag.

The honor guard will lead the salutes and taps will be played.

A light luncheon is to follow the ceremony.

Open bingo night

The SAL-sponsored bingo nights open to the community continue Monday at the Gilbert American Legion with card sales beginning at 6:30 p.m. and calling starting at 7 p.m.
