Tamaqua pool prepares for opening

Tamaqua borough is readying the H.D. Buehler Memorial Pool at Bungalow Park for the upcoming season.

“The pool has been cleaned and de-winterized,” borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt told council members during Wednesday evening’s meeting.

The borough plans to open the pool on May 28.

Its concession stand, however, will not open.

Councilwoman Mary Linkevich noted that no one expressed an interest in operating the stand. As a result, pool patrons will be allowed to bring food.

In keeping with pool matters, council hired Sean Wall, Nicohle Mushack and Nathan Hope as lifeguards at $10 per hour and McKenzee Coombe and Destini Denning as pool clerks at $9 per hour. The pool workers receive an additional 25 cents per hour for each year of service.

In police news, council approved a request to send police Chief Michael Hobbs to a Pennsylvania Justice Network and Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police conference in State College from June 16 to 17 at no cost.

Council also voted to send Hobbs and Councilwoman Kathy Kunkel to a Police Civil Service Procedures Training in Wilkes-Barre on June 2. The cost is $150 each.

In personnel matters, council transferred Ernie Shilko to the street maintenance/sweeper operator position, and Austin Fogel to the water treatment plant work leader position.

Finally, the borough received one bid for a vacant, tenth-acre property on the 500 block of West Cottage Avenue. Council accepted Matt Hope’s bid of $2,105.
