Bears roll in subregional opener

Fresh off an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship, Pleasant Valley’s girls lacrosse team was hoping to continue its excellent play.

On Thursday, the Bears did exactly that, rolling to a 16-0 win over Delaware Valley in a District 2/11 sub-regional quarterfinal game.

The Warriors came into the game having won three in a row while outscoring their opponents by a 53-17 margin.

But they proved to be no match for the home team.

To say that PV dominated play in the first half might be an understatement. DelVal’s goalkeeper was under siege right from the opening face-off, having to stop a shot just 22 seconds into the contest.

Then came a blitz of four goals in three minutes.

Riley Green found Alexandra Bush wide open for a goal. Madison Fava hit the back of the net on a free shot two minutes later, which was followed by a score from Devon Bush after 16 seconds had ticked farther off the clock. Twenty seconds past her goal, she scored again on a feed from Fava.

The Warriors could never get untracked and were on their defensive heels, trying to keep up with Pleasant Valley’s speed without success. At the 19:41 mark, Olivia Landoli scored an unassisted goal to make it 5-0.

“We always like to start strong,” said Bears head coach Toni Bush. “We try to have the mindset that every game we play is a championship game.”

The EPC titleholders kept the offensive pressure on the Warriors, controlling the time of possession that led to eight more first-half goals and a 13-0 mercy rule advantage at the intermission.

“At the half, we talked about getting into different offensive sets and working on our defensive game,” said Bush. “And with the big lead we had, I was concerned that we get nobody hurt for the semifinals.”

In the second half with the clock running, Delaware Valley came out with more energy and managed a few sustained attacks in the offensive zone, but never really threatened either Amanda Hayes or Abygail Borger - who shared the net minding for Pleasant Valley.

The Bears kept up their precision passing as Bush called for different alignments and attack strategies from the sideline.

More times than not, PV passed up golden opportunities to score at will in order to run down more minutes off the clock.

“We really stress moving and passing,” said Bush. “We don’t want players standing still and when they get the ball, they should get off a pass to a teammate within a few seconds.”

The Bears put up three more goals on the scoreboard in the final 25 minutes.

Alexandra Bush - who scored six goals in the game - beat the goalkeeper for the first and last goals of the second half, with Kaylee Dugey scoring off a pass from Iandoli in between.

With the win, PV moves to a semifinal game against second-seeded Easton on Monday at Northampton High School. The Bears beat the Rovers 14-11 in the EPC title game, the first time they had beaten them since PV’s lacrosse program began six years ago.

“After a slow start to the season, we’re really playing well now,” said Bush. “It won’t be easy beating Easton again, but we’ll be ready to go for it.”

UNSELFISH PLAY ... Coach Bush stresses teamwork, especially on the attack. “Any of our players can handle the ball, so we don’t play favorites.” Iandoli led the Bears with four assists, and Fava added two.

MISSING IN ACTION ... PV goalkeepers had little to do in the shutout. The Warriors managed four shots in the game that required three relatively easy saves.

MORE STATS ... While Alexandra Bush led PV with six goals, Devon Bush finished with four and Brielle McInaw added two. McInaw also had eight draw controls to lead her team in that category.

ANOTHER MILESTONE ... Alexandra Bush, who has reached a number of career milestone this season - 200 goals, 100 assist, 300 points - had five draw controls on Thursday, allowing her to reach the 500 mark.
