Schuylkill businessman Barton wins GOP ticket

Jamie Barton, an East Brunswick Township resident and Schuylkill County businessman, was the winner of a three-candidate Primary Election runoff on Tuesday.

He will face Tamaqua resident Tina M. Burns in the General Election for a two-year term in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Burns was unopposed.

Balloting took place in the 124th Legislative District, where longtime incumbent Rep. Jerry Knowles of Tamaqua is retiring at the end of the year.

Barton, vice president of the Jack Rich energy firm in Schuylkill, was a solid winner of the Republican nomination, tallying 6,129 votes, more than 3-1/2 times more than the second place finisher, Jill E. Saunders, who collected 1,719 votes. Ellen T. Rulavage finished third with 731 votes.

Burns was unopposed on the Democratic ballot and received 3,019 complimentary votes.

The district includes part of Berks County, including the townships of Albany, Greenwich, Maxatawny, Tilden, Upper Bern, Upper Tulpehocken and Windsor and the Boroughs of Hamburg, Kutztown and Lenhartsville, and Part of Schuylkill County, consisting of the townships of Delano, East Brunswick, Rush, Ryan, Schuylkill, South Manheim, Walker, West Brunswick and West Penn and the boroughs of Auburn, Coaldale, Deer Lake, Landingville, New Ringgold, Orwigsburg, Port Clinton and Tamaqua.
