Polk to honor veterans, unveil new plaque

The Polk Township Veterans’ Memorial Commission will be honoring local veterans at an unveiling ceremony at the memorial on May 29 at 2 p.m. This event which will be held at the Veterans Memorial, 135 Trach Road, Kresgeville.

The Polk Veterans Commission has been gathering names of local veterans for the new plaque since 2019. The 2022 unveiling ceremony will highlight the installation of the new plaque and includes the names of hundreds Polk Township veterans who served from WWII to present day.

The Veterans Memorial was built and dedicated in 1996 on land donated by the Strausberger family who lost their son, Whitey B., in the Vietnam War.

The current plaque and monument were dedicated on June 3, 1951, and lists local veterans from WWII.

This monument was moved to the Veterans Memorial which was unveiled in June 1996 as part of the Polk Township Sesquicentennial Celebration.

The 2022 unveiling ceremony program will last about one hour and will be followed by a short reception.

If you are planning to attend:

• Remember that this is a solemn event to honor and commemorate our military service members.

• Follow directions from fire police regarding parking and crossing Route 209. Drop-offs areas will be provided.

• Polk veterans merchandise will be available for purchase that day. Cash only.

• Bring lawn chairs. There is no seating available.

• The event starts promptly at 2 p.m. We suggest you arrive at least 15 minutes early.

• In the event of inclement weather, the event will be inside Salem-St. Paul church.
